The Dragon King Festival
This isn’t going to be a theory so much as me organizing my thoughts about the Dragon King Festival.
This event has interested me since it came up in the GMG arc. We first heard about it from Defense Minister Datong, as he muses on the fact that the GMG have their roots in the Dragon King Festival:
Others have pointed out that the dragon looks like a stylized version of Acnologia and that the human is wearing a scaly scarf that looks awfully familar.speculated that the figure on the right might actually be END
Another interesting aspect of this panel is that this Dragon King Festival included three races: dragons, humans, and demons. From the wording about how the three cannot co-exist, this Festival doesn’t come across as a friendly sporting competition.
Just a few chapters later, as the four dragon slayers square off, we cut to Igneel:

The question of timing in FT has always intrigued me. Why is “fate on the move” in the present era? If the dragon slayers were sent into the future, why this time and not another? Why was Acnologia once a ruler and then again a ruler in f! Rogue’s timeline, but isn’t ruling the world now? Zeref’s decided he’s going to end the world, but what’s he waiting for? Why didn’t Tartaros act when Franmalth tracked Zeref to Tenrou Island and found Hades’ soul, and instead let 7 years go by?
I think it’s because the power players are waiting for this event: the Dragon King Festival. From Igneel’s panels this chapter, it sounds like the dragons wanted their slayer children prepared for it.
Later on, in Zirconis’ story, we learn that the last time this “Festival” occurred, it was a bloody, brutal war:
Now, it’s not clear whether or not Acnologia became a dragon on the battlefield, though I like it for the dramatic impact. The dragons buried below the arena could’ve been all killed during the fighting. The GMG arena was probably the site of the previous Dragon King Festival.
If that’s the case, then perhaps the climactic events of FT will take place in Crocus. Magnolia got hammered this arc; it could be Crocus’ turn to be flattened (again) next time.
