Well it is noteworthy that its called rinnegan not another type of sharingan just like MS nd EMS.. Not much has been shown in the manga apart from the diff path powers..no1s even shown all the elemental affinities which is said to be available to a rinnegan user

I kinda imagine it to be as you upgrade you don't lose the abilities of the previous eyes but they are cumulative.... because its like saying with EMS you cant copy jutsu or track fast moving objects which are features of the sharingan according to Narutopedia :D My assumptions though....
