Sage gave him the sun symbol on his hand. He touched Gai's heart or chakra point using the sun and his heart pressure didn't stop meaning Naruto stopped the 8th gate and made Gai live. We don't really know how it works (neither does Naruto haha) but he saved his life....at least temporarily. :)
