well, he realized tobi's intentions and knew that only somebody controlling kyuubi power could stop him... he didn't really have time to think about that whole thing but he had a feeling to seal yang-part of kyuubi in naruto is the right thing and so on...

Maybe it sounds not that profound but when you imagine that MS is derived form of a normal sharingan with three tomoe around the pupil so... This tomoe changes there shape to known MS form. So, my theory: the number of 'stripes' or 'wheel spokes' xD could represent the number of tomoe. Normal...
