his purpose was always just to save his best friend, sakura asked him to bring him back, and itachi hopes naruto will spare sasuke but he really has nothing to worry about. naruto's dream of hokage comes second to his goal of saving sasuke.

I agree aswell on this too, sasuke didnt kill him that day to test himself, and also to not break their bond. sasuke probably knew that naruto wasnt trying to kill him regardless of how far the battle went, and when he finally had his chance to end the bond permently he walked away and spared...
