I agree with you. Gaara's defence is way better than Sasuke's because, as you wrote, it's automatic and you don't have to worry for your blind-spot. Susano'o also covers your blind-spot because it engulfs you. The difference is made by the fact that Gaara's defence wastes no chakra. And let's be...

he got those eyes when he entered the paper tree in which Nagato was hiding in the Konoha invasion arc. He was in sage mode, very pissed off and didn't had control over kyuubi => sage eyes + fox chakra = your post.
