Sentiment isn't bound to reason or logic, but the choices made in the face of it can be. I do agree that $100 doesn't seem like much for that sort of time commitment, but I would also argue the flip side of that point that I really wouldn't see any profile from any forum being worth that. Sure...

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. You can still have some sentimental value for what you built and spent time for, but that doesn't mean you can't lose interest in it. Like I said, I feel like trading cards are the best example I can personally think of. Plenty of people outgrow those sorts...

Account farming isn't exactly a new concept. MMORPGs have been doing it for a long time; since the original Ever Quest days and when WoW started up. Even Runescape I believe people do it a lot, they just usually go into it with the thought in mind of making monetary value off of it from start...
