No you don't need an Internet plan "Data plan" to connect to your home Wifi.
If you have already setup your phone, then just type in the wifi password and connect to the internet.
The Data plan is for 4G/LTE.
You can also check Youtube!!

It might depend on number of things. Your phone/wireless access point might not support each other. For example, Router is 802.11n and your phone only does .11b or 11g. Or one or the other doesn't support the same security type or authentication. I would say web into your router and match settings with your WLAN security type, authentication, and encryption with your phone.

It might be. But I don't know what type of wireless router you have. Mine is 4 years old. I had to match settings for it to work with my phone. It didn't connect with my old HTC Evo unless I broadcasted the SSID. With my Samsung Galaxy S3, I didn't have to change anything and it worked just fine. When I have friends over, I had to match their settings on their phone and or laptop with my router. That's why I said, web into your router and match settings with your phone.

When you Scan for wi-fi access points with your cell, does it see your router?
