so may be conductors mitigate (lessen) damage by containing the electricity and not letting it go crazy like it wants? (as long as it's ionized air?) just a theory
I change my theory to the idea that electricity can only travel through ionized air (which I already said).

I found some new info: we can view the ionization process as "burning a path" through the air for the lightning to follow, much like digging a tunnel through a mountain for a train to follow. (thankyou )

I think to have lightning affinity includes the ability to create ionized air so electricity can travel through it (like when Sasuke directs lightning when using Kirin). When you throw regular old air at the path, it ruins the path of electricity. (like putting boulders in the tunnel you burned for the train to go through?)

I think we're focusing too much on the actually elements vs eachother... Rather we should be focusing on the technique.

Elemental Jutsu requires Nature chakra and to manipulate the form.

Examples:

1. Rasengan vs Chidori = Evenly matched, even without an element.

2. Fire vs Wind = I know there is a battle scene were someone uses fire, and wind nullifies it. I'll have to research it, but I know it happened. Another thread brought this up actually.

Basically, the strength of the jutsu determines which element will win. But in its simplest sense, the chakra wheel explains which basic elements trump eachother.

3.gaara can make his sand so hard that nothing can destroy it(remember chuunin exam: sasuke VS gaara)
so...
In Gaara's battle with Sasuke, Sasuke's Chidori penetrated this "undestructible sand." Lightning is strong against earth.
And in the arc right before Akatsuki attacks the Sand Village, Gaara and company fought against The Tayumi/Takumi Village, and were saved by Konoha. In that fight, water jutsu was used against Gaara, making the "indestructible sand" soggy, and thus useless.
Therefore, my point was that water should be strong against earth...but I realize that we can't look at it that way.

Makes sense. Also, as far as air vs fire. Fire burns using Oxygen, assuming wind jutsus use Oxygen, that's giving the fire more fuel. It makes sense in the end.

Also: Yes, fire can evaporate water, but at the same time, but an equal amount of water will evaporate fire. Even if you can evaporate water: steam is still incredibly dangerous (arguably more so than plain old water, arguably more so than plain old fire too).

Earth vs. Water and Lightning vs. Earth still doesn't make much sense to me. Oh well.

mostly all earth contains minerals which are conductors for electricity. so electricity will go right to the conductors.

as for earth > water. I can't explain that well but according to the 8 trigrams (feng shui):
-earth is composed of great yin with a greater yin on top
-water is composed of great yin with a lesser yin on top
= so earth is greater.
