I just finished reading deathnote(the manga), and if i were to compare it plot wise to other mainstream manga, it pretty much owns them all.
If you look at shonens popular releases, lets take naruto, theres plenty of action and character development but a lot of inconsistencies and absurdities in the story. I dont read it but i hear the same thing about bleach. Kishi has an excuse, as he is both the writer and the artist of his manga, so he has less time to devote to plot. But even then he could have done way better.
For me, a quality manga is something that grips you, i.e makes you want to keep reading more at the end of each chapter. Bleach(read the first 10 mangas) doesnt have it, Naruto def used to but not anymore, from the first few chaps of one piece id say its got potential, if i haave time ill keep reading.
Now, even when i hated what happened, like when L was killed by the shingami rem, i couldnt wait to find out happens next. Add to that a logical and engaging story with solid artwork, and you got yourself a masterpiece(which is what deathnote is). Does anyone know of other manga that meet this criterion?

Claymore is a exceptional manga in my eyes. But a bit gruesome for the ones that don't look bloody fights.
But the story plot is legit.

oh death note.. My 2nd anime :3 finished the series in 2008. Good times and indeed, the best plot ever

Naruto is mainstream, because it's a damn good series. It didn't just become mainstream for no reason.

Of course, they're are great indie mangas out there which are brilliant too.

Agreed dude. Death Note had a really good plot. However; I believe they should have ended it around when:

L died... :T_T:

Either way; It easily destroys 99% of Anime plots, including Naruto.

It's TOO mainstream now. Shitty animations, no violence whatsoever, simpleton plot, annoying milking out of moments like 'naruto sasuke bond' and 'sakura crying'.

I would still consider deathnote a mainstream manga. Something like Monster or Gantz is what i consider not mainstream. I do agree that mainstream manga tends to lack in the plot department but that is because they tend to be long term so its bound to happen. Also deathnote tends to be a bridge anime/manga for most like myself. people tend to start at the main shonen releases then progress to something moderatly less main stream like deathnote and then they continue until the are eventually reading Monster

One question: is it lengthy(lots of chapters)?

No way! Lol L deserved to take down kira, not near(technically it was just luck not near but still).

Cuz i have a life? Lol dude i dont live and breathe manga like going on and till i eventually read this or that. I tend to be quite selective, reading naruto was the exception lol.

I never specified an exact time frame i said eventually it's a gradual process that i have noticed a good amount of readers tend to take that is all.

I do love Death Note but after rewatching some parts a bit.. I kept on questioning their ideas instead of buying into their hype. Some of their actions had sound logic but others felt like the plot allowed L or Light to be right for the sake of being right.

Loved the audio for that anime though. The whole concept is actually pretty good. I think Death Note seems to be more of a main stream manga/anime now though since a lot of people talk about it.

The one thing I dislike about Naruto is how a lot of questionable "plot holes" have to be solved by the readers themselves. The solutions seem improbable but it's the only thing to go for.
