I'm going to complain and ain't nothing you young people can do about it!

Yeah, the topic is greetings when walking outside, not in a very crowded place such as in a town.

I usually go out on my bicycle and follow this certain route meant for bicycles, pedestrians as well as some others(horses which means horse ****).
Well out there pedalling my bike like the good citizen I am, I can't help but notice how others are doing the same or walking Et Cetera.
So, being of good ol' values, I deem it polite to greet people I pass by, as I'm passing them by one and one with intervals of at least a few minutes, not walking through a crowd. I've been brought up thinking it would be a waste of time to say hello to every person I pass by in a crowd as I wouldn't be able to greet all of them which would lead to me feeling like a douche bag, hence this topic relates to the not-so-crowded situations.
There I am, pedalling with all my heart, and whenever I am about to meet someone on the way, you guessed it, I greet them. Be it by nodding my head or saying 'hello', I notice a difference in response.
Though this is generally viewed as there are exceptions, let me explain it with a sentence conveying the feelings of my heart.

**** you young people!!

I ain't up to greeting y'all and you just pass by as if it never happened!

...

The questions/topic is: How is it wherever you are? Does the elderly outshine the young ones when counting the amount of times you're greeted back or perhaps is it the other way around or equally so?
Do you think young people should put some more effort into being polite?

I'm sorry if you found it unpleasant reading the text above as it contained a few "bad" words, or hints to what could be "bad" words, it is merely an outburst of love for all the young people in this world, I wish them all well.

Edit: ah.. I forgot to add the option of young people being the ones whom says hello the most.. Uhm.. It's unlikely to happen unless you live in an area with lots of young people and few older, so let's go with this:hint:

Ha?
No, wait..
Uhm.. What might you mean with these cryptic letters mr. Enzo?

so your point is that you say hello to young people but they don't respond? if that's the case than it happens to me sometimes.
Yes, except a few whom actually do greet me back. However the ones whom have aged beyond at least 40 are better at saying hi, by far.

yeah, older people generally are better at greeting back, but i make sure that i greet back whoever greets me, being young or old, but there are some young idiots who think they're too cool or they're above the others that don't even look when someones says hi.

what if their not aloud to talk to strangers??
I'm pointing to people older than at least 14, and if that is still the case then.. Who is it that tells them not to talk to strangers?

As do I when greeted.
Yes, whatever reasons they have is but arrogance! Most of the time at least, if I am to assume things. Ugh.. It annoys me a lot.

Could be in some cases, that they're socially awkward as you say. Hope they can break free from it, considering what they miss out on~

I don't like saying Hi to ANYONE that I don't know. If it's an older teacher or friend I do say hi but if a random person or you said hi and since Idk, I would ignore you ._.

When I go out, I don't start greeting ppl, but if someone greets me or smiles me, I answer back nicely...even if you're a strangerxd There's this neighbour that greets me everytime he sees me...first I was shocked and kinda paranoid, but still said hello. He has never done anything weird, so now I even smile while greeting him xd

I'm not the type to really directly greet someone myself. Add that to the fact that I usually don't look people in the eye when I speak to them. However, if some kind soul does say hello to me, I do say hello back, so I'm not anti-social or anything. I just don't initiate the hello.
