No thrid raikage ? Anyways, i think Gaara still has the best one. Sasanoo and the sand both have offense/defense but sand takes less strain and chakra.

The third raikage has a powerful and durable body, but here we are comparing absolute defense jutsus.

Garaa sand is the best in my oppinion (we're not counting sasuke EMS susanoo right?) I like it cuz its just automatically protects u if the opponent is not tht fast n plus it has offensive 2 I think rotetion is a really good defense but some attacks won't b deflected by it like those spider treads so I think if u shoot Amaterasu at him it would just leave the flames around u making u stuck plus after rotating u make a great opening since the opponent can just wait the second u stop rotating n attack

i have to point something out

-rotation is only short term unlike the others

gaara can keep the sand wall there and keep the armor on sasuke has sasunoo active for hole matchs but rotation is short time and after a wile he has to stop leaving him open to attack

Gaara's defense is the most absolute.. Even susano'o users are vulnerable when they are asleep.

actually, it can last as long as the user wants like susanoo. gaaras auto-defense is always active so he doesn't worry about using chakra for it.

Neji wouldn't be open to attack because the byakugan would allow him to anticipate any incoming attacks before he stopped.

It has to be Susanoo. You forgot to mention that the user can also use jutsu's while inside Susanoo. The user can rewrite the entire battlefield. The user has armor penetrating strength. The user can seal people as well as block almost all attacks. Gaara's sand is also versatile. Rotation is stationary meaning the user has to stay in one spot. All an attacker has to do is just keep attacking until the rotation user is out of chakra. Rotation is the worst possible type of defense because it's negatives outweigh it's positives. It's Susanoo, Gaara's sand and then maybe Rotation.

This is simply the defensive/offensive abilities of the jutsu itself.

Rotation is stationary, but it is a rotational defense, which is better able to handle attacks than wall type defenses like Susanoo and Gaaras sand. Susanoo also happens to be stationary, though it is a wall type defense that has offensive properties. The user doesnt have to keep rotating because they have other deadly offensive jutsu that can be used to take out an opponent.

In terms of pure defensive capabilities rotation tops them because it has the least amount of weaknesses that can be used to take it down. Gaaras sand and susanoo just seem better since they can be used offensively as well.

prove it i have never seen it for more then 5 sec, because i dont think he can keep it up whats he to do if say kakashi is right out of its range lighting blade in hand can he really stop that? also he cant move wile doing it makeing it easy to attack him

Just like Susanoo users are susceptible to underground attacks rotational users are too. Difference is Susanoo can be modified in mid-air to have arms or ribcages, rotation cannot. Rotation has the blind spot just like Susanoo. Just like Susanoo, rotation is only as active as the amount of chakra the user has. And how can the rotation user use offensive jutsu if they are bombarded by attacks. And Rotation can be destroyed by a piercing type attack. I'd like to see Rotation block Kirin. You have to have monstrous strength to enough crack Susanoo much less break it. You have to be extremely fast to get through Gaara's sand. All you need to do is pierce through Rotation and the user has to expel more chakra and spin much faster to even hope of blocking or deflecting multiple barrages of attacks. Rotation is not versatile at all.

It hasn't been done so for long periods of time, but it can be done simply because the users stop after the attack is over to conserve chakra. The byakugan allows the user to see if a person is just waiting for them to stop and can therefore take counter measures to avoid them.

Just like Susanoo users are susceptible to underground attacks rotational users are too. Difference is Susanoo can be modified in mid-air to have arms or ribcages, rotation cannot. Actually rotation defends from below as well. Whenever it is used it leaves a crater in the ground where the chakra in protecting them from below. Rotations size and power can be controlled by the user at will. Rotation has no blind spots which is why it is called an absolute defense. Not everyone is capable of constanly blitzing an opponent, and the user will be able to take advantage of that once they stop. Rotation cant be destroyed by a piercing attack because of the centrifugal forces of the defense itself. The combined ejection and rotating of the chakra will simply force the attack to the side and leaving the user unharmed. Rotation will break under the power of Kirin because it is a massive jutsu that would overpower the chakra itself. The only attacks that can get through rotation is a drilling type jutsu like odama rasengan or maybe even wolf fang over fang, or massive scale jutsus that would cause the chakra to be crushed under its power like Kirin.

Rotation doesnt have to be versatile to be powerful which is why I said that gaaras sand and susanoo seem to be extremely powerful. They have offensive capabilities, but their defense is nothing like rotation which can handle more damage than the other two. This is why rotation is so underrated because people only think of the offensive power when comparing jutsus. Contrary to popular belief, Rotation can actually be used offensively like hiashi did against the 20 sand ninja during the invasion of konoha.

Ok, i read all, but sorry i've to disagree with you. Not that you are totally wrong, but i would like to say that there is no really best defense. Every defense has his advantages and disadvantages.

First of all you must know there are different types of Susanoo. So it depends now about which Susanoo you are talking about. Itachis Susanoo with yata mirror for example makes it hard for almost any attack to go through it. Madaras Perfect Susanoo is just too big and too strong for that a simple ninja with katons, suiton, fuuton or even with raw strength for example could break through it. When we've already seen that part1 Naruto(with Kyubis chakra) for example was able to do damage on Neji eventhough he released his kaiten just with one punch. And that's when we forget the fact that in the contrary of Susanoo or Gaaras sand, Neji must know when to use his rotation and he has to do it. So if he is surprised by an attack, he can't release his kaiten fast enough to protect himself.

Anyway, Gaaras sand was also penetrated by multiple occasions either by speed or by penetrating jutsus. Things that i hardly see happening against Madaras Perfect Susanoo(it protect from every side, so speed is useless) unless the attack is also significantly destructiv. For these reasons then, if we only count the defense aspect, Madaras Susanoo is better. So if i were to put up my list about which defense protect better, i would say it goes like this:

1- Madaras Susanoo
2- Itachis Susanoo
3- Sasukes Susanoo
4- Gaaras sand
5- Nejis kaiten

Now the problem with Susanoo is that it takes a ridiculous amount of chakra and i believe that Perfect Susanoo takes even much more chakra than a normal Susanoo and it's probably the reason why Itachi could not awake it(he doesn't have a great chakra). But that's if we talk about Perfect Susanoo. A normal Susanoo is enough in a fight. I'm not sure about this one, but i think Neji said in part1 that Kaiten also takes an important quantity of chakra to be released, not like Susanoo obviously, but it does take a great quantity also. Gaaras sand in the contrary takes no chakra at all since it's automatic. So in terms of chakra used on each defense, Gaaras sand is better

1- Gaaras sand
2- Nejis kaiten
3- Susanoo(depending on the version the user decides to use)

PS: I think you forgot about Tobis defense when i believe he is the one who has the best defense in this manga

I have already mentioned the type of susanoo I was refering to in the beginning. I have a solid statement to counter for the reason why KN0 punch caused the rotation to backfire.

Without the full spinning effect of a full rotation, the centrifugal force that is key to the strength of the defense is greatly weakened, and the result is the much weaker repulsive force of an incomplete rotation. The power of the KN0 punch was therefore able to match the emission of chakra that Neji himself was emitting, leading to the repulsion of both parties. The reason as to how the rotation was incomplete is because we can see Neji begining to rotate, but never completing a full rotation. Whenever he rotates, his body becomes blur.

Also, I never said that any one defense is the best. I just said that there are certain areas that the jutsus are better at.

If you look at my previous post you would see why Tobis intangibility doesnt count for this comparison

How can rotation protect underground if Naruto defeated Neji by coming up under the ground or did that slip your mind. And rotation has a blind spot close to the neck. Go re-read the manga and you'll see for yourself. If rotation can't be destroyed by a piercing attack then why was it destroyed by kidomaru's arrow?
You saying that Rotation can block/ deflect Kirin is proof that you are a fanboy and you're just making shit up.

You saying that Rotation can block/ deflect Kirin is proof that you are a fanboy and you're just making shit up.

Neji was caught off guard by Narutos attack and didnt have his byakugan turned on to see him coming. This was after they had both clashed together and Neji was walking away because of his arrogant attitude.

the byakugan has a blind spot behind the neck, not the rotation. The rotation was actually made to cover for the blind spot so that no one could take advantage of it.

It was also never destroyed by kidomaru's arrow. In fact kidomaru had to stop Neji from rotating just so that he could hit him with the arrow. the barrier that it went through was just a sensory barier meant to alter the course of the arrow by a little bit. If he had used rotation on the arrow, it would have been completely deflcted by the jutsu.

When did I ever say that rotation could block Kirin? Go reread my last post to you and see what I actually said.

Rotation is my favorite jutsu and I know all of the strengths and weaknesses of it. You'll have to do better than that to counter my arguements.

Overall I would say Gaara's Defense is the greatest.
It's extremely fast, resistant, can be broken but reformed just as quickly, it has a powerful offense and allows Gaara to manipulate enormous amount sand in desert like areas or even create new sand anywhere near the earth. His defense activates on his own defending him from attacks even he couldn't see. We've seen Gaara hold his ground against 5 full Susanoo.

Susanoo would be second best overall considering it's high offensive abilities of course, it's power will vary from users. Susanoo can be outfitted with extra items such as the Yata mirror and Totsuka blade, making it a 1hit-kill absolute defense with no elemental weakness and able to endure extremely powerful blows. This can however only be applied to Itachi and since he died with the items, it can be concluded that they're most likely forever gone. A normal MS Susanoo attack strength is variable. It has good defensive power but can be shattered. A user can be pulled out, attack from underground or even pinned on a spot by thing like sand. It's a permanent defense when it's activated but is extremely chakra taxing as well as really painful for the user ( which seems to be often forgotten) it leads to imminent blindness.

Having not much offensive capacities, rotation is overall third. It however , despite being more temporary then the others 2, would be classified 2 in defense as the Byakugan allows to see any attack ( except a really small blind spot that almost no one knows). This allows for chakra conservation which outranks the heavy chakra cost of the Susanoo. The Rotation also logically allows for underground defense because the Byakugan would permit to see an incoming attack or foe and the jutsu itself is shown to dig the ground without trying. If they did try to dig the ground they would most likely be able to as the rotation acts like the sand armor, it makes an incomplete sphere around the user but is able to make an entire sphere when the space allows it. If it cannot dig, than the user can jump midair slightly before the attack to be able to create the entire sphere than land right on top of the enemy, trapping him between the sphere and the ground, basically becoming a dangerous backfire on the attacker. So far the rotation greatest weakness has been to apply a great chakra resistance to slow down the user like Kidomaru did with chakra webs.

Well the fact that Rotation deflects the attack back at the opponent is a nice perk, although I'm not sure I would rank it as high as you did. I also think that Gaara's sand and probably Susano'o are better in team battles since they can defend their allies in battle (although Gaara's sand is better than Susano'o here since it can defend from a long distance. The only way I can see rotation defending them is if Neji uses the jutsu in front of his allies. If this is a 1vs1 battle then this doesn't apply as much.

I'm gonna give it to Gaara, Rotation is too limited on what the user can do and how long it can be used for. And Susano'o drains chakra like crazy aswell as more or less killing the user with fatigue
