Jiraiya, Minato and Itachi all believed that Tobi was Madara. One of the primary reasons the Madara threory survived so long was because each of these reliable sources thought Tobi was him and no one else. Itachi's beliefs could be considered the most reliable of all, considering he worked with Tobi and knew the Uchiha family so well. Itachi was absolutely convinced that Tobi was Madara and even treated Sasuke like a child when he refused to believe that Tobi was Madara.
In addition, Minato's battle with Tobi proved to him that Tobi had skills of such a caliber, that no one in his mind except Madara could even stand a chance against him. Jiraiya was also convinced that the only person who could possibly be strong enough to control and summon the Kyuubi was Madara. Therefore, he also considered Tobi to be Madara for that exact reason.
I guess what I'm getting at is that I'm glad that Jiraiya, Minato and Itachi are all long dead so that they wouldn't have to deal with a 14 year old kid making them believe he was Madara. I mean this punk ass kid who turn out to be Tobi had enough power to wipe out entire villages and bring the shinobi world to its knees, its sad that he was able to utterly fool all three of them.
Well done Kishi, although you completely destroyed all the integrity that you built up in this manga for so long, you managed to save the legacy of 3 of your favorite characters by making sure they weren't around after being proved to completely misinterpret their enemy's strength and identity. Again, way to go Kishi.
