they weren't lifeless. orochimaru came up with a way to make them into mindless puppets that he could control using a seal attached to a kunai that he would jam into the back of their heads when he summoned them. this can all be found in the manga at the end of the chunin exams. i agree with the other posts, he was trying to develop an innovative jutsu that would give the leaf an edge in battle. when he realized how terrible it was he made it a kinjutsu.

to put this in real life perspective: the us created the atom bomb. the us dropped the atom bomb. the us realized how messed up it was and has since tried to make sure it was never used again.

Yea but Asuma was self-aware, he wasn't lifeless. Compare him to the Tobirama and Hashirama Hiruzen had to fight. As far as I remember they were completely devoid of life (Same with any edo Kabuto stops controlling)

So if the technique worked like Kabuto is using it back when Tobirama invented it, Tobirama should be considered an "evil" character having created a true abomination, but since the bodies were probably lifeless and only used for their abilities it's not that bad

hashirama and tobirama weren't lifeless until after orochimaru put a seal onto the back of their heads. they were completely self aware of what was going on but they couldn't do anything about it.

here. take a look. about halfway down. "invasion of konoha arc'. says they were fully aware of what was going on and had control until orochimaru planted a seal into the back of their heads. I'm pretty sure they even apologized to hiruzen for what they were about to do.

Um Orochimaru was attempting to perfect the jutsu, so it's very possible for Madara to have attempted the same thing free of the second's influence. The Hokage's convictions have always been unshakable, each and every legit Hokage has put their lives on the line for the sake of the village so it's damn near impossible that the 2nd would be working with Madara to create a jutsu that would all but destroy the world.

You really need evidence that supports Theories like this before you make a thread on it, it would be so much better and it could be dissected and analyzed better than it has been so far.

madara lived long enough after his battle with hashi. remember he was able to meet up with nagato when he was a child. so in that period of time he could have learned about the jutsu. there are lots of possibilities. so, even after the death of tobirama, he gathered all the info and knew that he could use it in the future. he probably knew that he couldnt be successful in his lifetime so instead of persisting with his plans, he thought of preserving his body, while it is in its prime. there's a possibility that madara killed himself in order to retain his looks. so that when he would be revived from edo tensei, he would not look old.

@doesn't make sense because edo is designed to ressurect a person in their prime for optimal damage

This thread was about bringing to attention that madara was the only one who knew how to release the jutsu out of everyone that was revived. And so you're saying what you posted was evidence that was nothing but an opinion.

im not reading though everything so this may have been said, but maybe madrara took izuna eyes and then he died (im not including and tobi idea theory crapola here so dont be like "izuna didnt die cause hes tobi). after which madrara had his fight with the first, after some time the first died and maybe madrara made a reapperance. then the second made the edo tensei to bring the frist back ?(cause he is the only one who can beat him). but its proven that he never finished making it. then maybe madrara got beat again by first or knew there was no way he could win and ran. madrara prolly copied what he could of it with his ems and finished it, also finding out about how to break the contract. a reason why he would do that? like he said, he will never be controlled by such a jutsu. he finished the edo tensei before oro because he knew he would be brought back to life one day.
