Yeah, I get what you're saying. But that means Sakumo had more potential if he was better at a similar age?
I've fit the timeframes together, and Sakumo would have been a good 10-15 years older than the Sannin at the time of his death. Kakashi is currently 29-30, same as Yahiko/Nagato/Konan. The Sannin are roughly 50 in age, and Kakashi was 13 at the time his dad died. That would have made them around 36-38 years old, roughly at the time Sakumo died, while he was closer to 50-55 at that point.
Edit: So, at that point, he would have obviously been stronger. He was about the age of Hiruzen, give or take a few years. Thus, he would obviously be stronger than under-developed Sannin at that time(Just like Hanzo, even though he still whooped their ass.)
I don't think it was said Kakashi was 13 when his father died. Kakashi was 13 when he became jounin. Pretty sure Kakashi was several years younger when his father died, but I could be wrong. My memory is failing me atm.
Kakashi was 6-7 when his father died
my bad lmao meant to type 7-8Kakashi was 8 when that mission incident occurred, according to this(13-5 = 8 is how I'm getting that, obviously):

It's not said exactly how long after he took his life, though:

Kind of off-topic here, but I never understood how he was looked down upon by the village, not with Hiruzen as hokage. The way Hiruzen was, his entire tenure as Hokage, gives us no reason to believe he would look down upon Sakumo for saving his teammates..something that from what we know, Hiruzen would have done as well.
