"You really are a Rare Beast... Ninjas this skilled in Taijutsu are pretty rare... though your the third I've seen"

These are the words from Kisame, in regards to Might Gai. So I thought to myself... is this a mistranslation, or does Kisame know of 2 other Taijutsu users as good as Gai Sensei? This may seem as an easy answer, but no so much.

1) First of all, it honestly could be a mistranslation. This was the 3rd time that Kisame fought Gai, so it could honestly mean that this was the 3rd time he encountered Gai's Taijutsu in general.

2) Kisame is called the Tailless Tailed Beast, he is that strong. Additionally, because of Sameheda, his natural weakness is a Skilled Taijutsu user who does not focus on chakra based attacks. Since Kisame is still alive, he must have defeated very skilled taijutsu users throughout the years... so he should be one of the best "judges" of taijutsu on the manga. And FYI he still lost to Gai Sensei lol so Gai must be UP THERE.

3) Kishi has never revealed anyone in the Manga that was ever talented enough to open gates, other than Rock Lee and Kakashi (1st Gate). Although Kisame fought Gai, he noted Kakashi for his Ninjutsu (sharigan) NOT Taijutsu. Lee is too young here to be considered here. This would mean the other 2 Great Taijutsu users CANNOT OPEN GATES.

4) There are some shinobi with "good" taijutsu skills, but not on par with a shinobi who uses PURE TAIJUTSU. Kisame says (possibly) that there are 2 other shinobi who's TAIJUTSU specifically was on par with Gai Sensei. Shinobi like Mifune and Itachi are great examples, but they are mainly focused on Kenjutsu and Doujutsu respectively. I would not put these shinobi and others (See Below) in the same category as an A Ranked Taijutsu User.

So... is this a mistranslation? And if not, and there are 2 other shinobi as good in Taijutsu as Gai Sensei, who are they? And would they be able to defeat Gai Sensei, or lose like Kisame did...?

My Picks: Tsunade and Jiraiya

OTHER POSSIBLILITIES:

Jiraiya = Sage Mode Frog Kata Taijutsu, makes him my #1 Pick. BEASTY. Could have possibly fought Kisame in Sage Mode.
Tsunade = This is my best guess (my #2) at one of the other 3 top Taijutsu users. Her Taijutsu is unparralleled.
Raikage "A" = Uses Taijutsu, but this includes a Nature affinity ninjutsu. Correctly labeled NinTaijutsu.
Kimmimaru = Another good pick (my #3), but his Kekkei Genkai is more of a Kenjutsu than Taijutsu. But no one can offer any arguement to his Taijutsu prowless after fight Rock Lee.
Mifune = Known for Kenjutsu, not Taijutsu
Itachi = Kisame's partner, but known for Doujutsu not Taijutsu
Killer Bee = Known for Kenjutsu, not Taijutsu
Kakashi = Kisame addressed his Sharigan when first fighting him. He is known for his Doujutsu not Taijutsu.
Madara (Tobi) = Not confirmed that Kisame ever watched him fight. Hell we have never seen Tobi fight Taijutsu yet.
Neji/Rock Lee/Naruto = Too young to be considered here. Highly doubtful Kisame has ever fought either of them.

Ok? It is the wrong translation. Go look at other scans, he says this is the third time i've faced you, which is true, it is the third time. He is basically saying that because he is saying even though this is the third time he battled Guy, he didn't know he had this much strength hidden away. If you look at the next chapter after the one OP posted, Kisame says exactly what I am talking about basically.

From all other translations I've read, Kisame states that its his third time fighting Guy:

To me, this translation makes more sense. Kishi wouldn't leave something so open ended and not tell us considering someone better at Taijutsu than Guy would be entirely impossible. Keep in mind that a statement like "Seeing someone with *yadda yadda* is a rarity" basically means that person is the best in the Narutoverse with it. How many people can you say have Susanoo? Sasuke Madara and Itachi maybe? Remember that Tobi called that a 'rarity', so there is nothing beyond Guy's level of Taijutsu and likely no one else has achieved it.

I don't want to go too much into this, but remember the mistranslation in 510 about Tobi hunting down paths? Ie him and Hashi being paths 1 and 2 and Nagato being 3? That was obviously a mistranslation and a lot of us were waiting for things to happen that were never going to because there were never '6 paths' just the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sage's of the 6 Paths. I hope ppl get where I'm going with this, but considering we have yet to see a person top Guy's Taijutsu (which again is impossible IMO) than I have to say that there is indeed no one better than him and thus your thread is based on a mistranslation.

He meant it was the 3rd time he fought Gai.

NOBODY has taijutsu better than Gai. When someone can turn air molecules into a barrage of burning death, and punch nothing so hard that it becomes a dam TIGER, then they can say that they have better taijutsu than Gai

If anything(may sound far fetched) take away Madaras Susanoo, and I bet gai could take him

Madara most likely.

I bet hes an expert at Taijutsu.

Also Tobi seems to have strong Taijutsu , able to kill fodders by walking by them and doing very fast kicks with legs.

I AGREE MAN.........

My thread is NOT based on a mistranslation. My thread is actually to FIND OUT if it is indeed a mistranslation or not, hence the name of the Thread!

dude this was a mistranslation,

kisame said this is the thrid time we have fought.

The narutobase manga during this time was greatly flawed trasnlations wise, I mean we still get some guys talking about who are the 6 paths after tobi talking about nagato and himself. Which also was translated poorly.

I suggest u look into the mangashare manga listing for the old ones, or *********** if they still release manga. Mangapanda is good too most times.

As others have pointed out, it looks to be a mistranslation. I don't know Japanese, so I can't be sure, but the first thought that came to mind was that it was intended to be a joke that got lost in translation. Perhaps Kisame was poking fun at Gai's poor memory by feigning forgetting that those other two people were, in fact, Gai himself. Just my thoughts, but it could explain how both translations might be half correct.

I would like to point out that Kisame said that before seeing Gai's full force, if Kisame could speak from the grave he'd say Gai was the strongest, seeing as he killed him and all. Also it only says the third I've "seen" he didn't rank guy as the third best just the third person he's ever seen at that level. If you believe the translation error to mean it's their 3rd fight then it's probably just a reference to how gai still has something to show Kisame each time they fight.
