Okay so I have a theory and I might be looking way to much into this but here we go.
There are three imperial regailia in Japanese mythology. Two of them are outright shown in the Manga. The sword of Kusangi, the Yata mirror. The third is a jewel worn on a necklace known as Yasakani no Magatama.
I think that the necklace Naruto wore is this third object.
The first two, held by Itachi's Susanoo (Susanoo is the Shinto god of the sea) symbolize valor(sword) and wisdom(mirror) Two qualities that are held by Itachi. The jewel symbolizes benevolence which is the very essence of Naruto's being.
If this is true, Kishi is a masterful writer, but then again I may just be looking too much into it.

These arn't the real objects, Almost no one has seen them. This is what people think they look like.
