Actually, there is nothing in it, it's kind of usual and it still is happening in the world. Just not everyday you can find somewhat like it on internet, watch news more often ^^.

"Honor Killing" is the name given to this certain practice by the people who perform it not by social scientists and it has a double meaning, it is an ambiguity.
There's the "honor" of the woman and the "honor" of the men of the family.
She ashamed her family by not protecting her "honor" -in this case her virginity, so the only way the men of the family can restore their "honor" is to kill her.
And of course set an example for the rest women of the family >.<

Iraq's culture is based on the dipole "shame & honor" and yes we see it as something disgusting, but it's their culture, the way they were raised.
Still this practice is forbidden by the European Court of Human Rights and all other international Laws.
