And that's not how I read it. To me he never said he was just good enough etc.. But he said he had a brain on par with shikimaru...If someone says someone has a brain on par with einstein's, then they are obviously just as smart as Einstein aren't they?

And you sir, are an idiot. Itachi is smart but he is not the smartest, he is not even the second smartest. He is good and talented, he was well trained so he has great battle analysis abilities. But he got played by others his entire life and every single one of his plans came short of being successful. Hopefully he will succeed breaking Edo Tensei and that will change but as of now this is the situation.

Stop making a fool of yourself, when every body explains you something that shows you are wrong in so many different ways it's usually a good sign that you are indeed wrong.

Again changing the wording. Its about context. If kakashi is just below shika(i dont think he is) does that mean he loses? Does it mean u have be exactly on the same level to defeat the enemy or is there a range?
Naruto asks him what he is? He says he can come up with a strategy which will involved a straw and 9% chakra to do the job just like shika would. That doesnt mean his brain would function exactly as fast or come up with multiple strategy in hax mode like shika. He could be marginally close or even faster in terms of number and complexity of tactics. Not necessarily the same, judging from the context

Just to clarify, i think in part 1, kakashi> shika. Shippuden kakashi = shika, in future or when kakashi gets powerup, shika > kakashi. Most intelligent = shikaku. Basically, with experience, shika becomes/surpass father. Thats why i say shika> kakashi

Shikamaru does not have any special talents like itachi does. He uses the few things he has such as his shadow jutsus, smoke bombs, kunais, shurikens, etc during battle. Unlike him, itachi relies more on the vast no of jutsus he has been able to acquire. He is always switching techniques when one fails to work. Take a look at his fights. When his sharingan fails, he uses mangekyo, susano, izanami, etc. He doesn't even have the intelligence to realise that his long term plan was not working on his younger brother. Yes, he has the ability to develop counter measures in seconds. But dats just because of his wealth of experience. Despite being naturally lazy, shikamaru can be difficult to battle with, as he is always at least 5 steps ahead of u. Look at his fight with the sound ninja girl, hidan and kakuzu, and temari. He known the right and best decisions to take, and knows when to back down. Backing down has never been itachi's strong point. Dats somtin he should learn. It is said that kakashi is almost as smart as shikamaru. But even he admits shikamaru's intelligence. Asuma taught shikamaru chogi, but was never able to beat him. Kishi makes up for shikamaru's lack of jutsus by giving him friends who are willing to die for him (something itachi'll neva have). With them, shikamaru is as strong as itachi. Maybe even stronger.

Intelligence is not a single entity.It cant be decided on one factor.

1) First thing, Shikaku or Shikamaru havent shown any "HIGH" Intelligence tactic yet,about shikamaru defeating hidan,just look how much time he took to plan & implement it..I'm not saying they're not intelligent,but they are good enough only for 'planning'.even Shikaku case,they already had intel about the enemy,so shikaku could prepare a best plan.They are not individually strong,but their strength lies in planning for a team/army. Shikamaru/shikaku wont be able to decide how naruto or any other individual will improve in battles,but they can plan out how a team of 5 ninjas can out match another 5. In short,they are able to 'plan' out a strategy,but they're not responsible for the implementation.

2) Second type is to foresee something well in advance & to prepare to counter it & battle tactics. first eg: Itachi, no need to write about him...he's too good in this thing....however,inspite of planning all this about sasuke, sasuke still chose the wrong path, so thats a failure too, but I'd say itachi had to take the risk of doing all this to sasuke. second eg: Tobi....many people doubt tobi's intelligence when they see him using chain against minato (especially in anime),however, they should also remember,he wasnt good in taijutsu, so he did all he could, & instead, see how he was able to infiltrate during kushina's pregnancy, he could enter the secret konoha barrier, seperate minato from kushina, take her away & extract kyubi....it's not that easy doing all that, & he had done too much planning..3rd eg: Minato.... about the tobi/kurama episode, as inspite of all the planning tobi did,minato was able to out-smart tobi(inspite of being unprepared), the way he hit tobi after ftg lvl 2, put a mark on tobi, did contract seal even before tobi could know....also, during his fight vs A, the way he put his mark on Bee & then landing perfectly to have a stalemate in order to allow his comrades escape...

In My opinion,most intelligent are:
a) when planning for oneself,
minato = itachi as no one can match their intelligence when it comes to tactics....they can figure out a strategy & more importantly, successfully implement it.
b) when given the resources & time, and planning for a team/army,
Shikaku = shikamaru, even though shikaku is more experienced, from what we've seen in manga,both seem to be equal.

He wanted to die by Sasuke's hands, thereby restoring Uchiha honour, and name. All he ended up doing was alienating his brother, and putting a lot of people at serious risk. Itachi was born into the Uchiha clan as the eldest son of Mikoto and Fugaku Uchiha and was praised by all as the best of his generation, a genius above all others, even by the standards of the battle-adept Uchiha clan, Itachi's prowess far outshone their own. However, few could understand him. When he was only four, Itachi had already witnessed countless lives lost due to the Third Shinobi World War, which emotionally traumatised him and turned him into a pacifist. This is a brief summary of his intelligence. If you look at the parts in bold you'll notice that he was praised by many, and without a doubt already one of the most intelligent character introduced to the series.

At age 7, Itachi graduated from the Academy at the top of his class after only one year, mastered the Sharingan at age 8, passed the Chūnin Exams at age 10, enrolled in ANBU half a year later and became captain by 13. I'm sure the parts in bold surprise you.

When Itachi volunteered to fight Kakashi as they were coming for the Akatsuki in the early parts of the Shippuden, I'm sure he wasn't even scared. He managed to fend off Chiyo, Kakashi, Sakura and Naruto despite not having the Mangekyo Sharingan with him. Although he lost, he did his job, and if he wanted to I'm sure he could have done some serious damage.

One of the greatest feats that Itachi has achieved is breaking out of the Edo Tensei. Although many might argue that it was a completely lucky event and had nothing to do with intelligence. I beg to differ. If that was anyone else they would not have known what to do with KA. KA isn't, and was never supposed to be used for the Edo Tensei. The fact that Itachi, so quickly realized that he could break out of it with KA is tremendous and is also a monument to his intelligence.

Just look at Kabuto's poor face, and his reaction. "Uchiha Itachi... he's clearly on another level to the others!" I wonder if Kabuto had Shikamaru in his mind when he was saying this :noc:

Here we see Itachi blocking Nagato's summon, so he can create a blind spot in the Rinnegan's shared field of vision! This is insanity, I don't know whether he figured this out on the spot, or he already knew about the Rinnegan's shared field of vision, but either way, Shikamaru would never have been able to do this. Some ask why this requires intelligence, it's a physical feat, no? That may hold some truth, but without intelligence such a feat could not have been executed.

One of my favourite things I like to reminisce about is the time when Itachi analyzed Nagato's Chibaku Tensei. Something I doubt Shikamaru would have been able to do, please note that me saying Shikamaru not being able to analyze Chibaku Tensei properly is just my opinion, it holds no facts. Let's explore this feat.

Here we see Itachi noting almost instantly that is has a gravitational pull! This is ludicrous! What a genius!

Within seconds Itachi's already figured out Chibaku Tensei's weakness. What a genius! Note how he also says that you do not have to aim as it's gravitational pull will simply guide the attack. Shikamaru has nothing on this. They seem to think that tactically he's better, which is false.

This is the final feat of Itachi that I'd like to get over with, as this thread has already become a wall of text!

Again, people seem to think that tactically Shikamaru has done more than Itachi, but they can't come up with a shred of evidence. In this fight Itachi teaches Kakashi about the Sharingan. IMO Kakashi got owned. Notice that in this picture Itachi is so calm, and seems to be formulating a plan.

Even Kakashi, the man praised as an intellectual among his generation pales in comparison the Genius of Uchiha Itachi. He admits it himself. He also comments that Itachi hasn't even begun to show his true power, and proceeds to imply that he's simply toying with them.

May I ask what Shikamaru was doing at age 7? What was Shikamaru mastering at age 8? When did Shikamaru pass the Chūnin Exams? When did Shikamaru enroll to become an Anbu Captain? When did Shikamaru ever, ever, do anything on the scale that Itachi has? When has he ever done something worthy of mention? I'll applaud him for the fact that Tobi mentioned he was a pain to fight, but apart from that, what other big time things has he achieved? Oh yeah, he hasn't done anything extremely special. Never. He wasn't doing any of that. Itachi has been shown to achieve great feats even at a young age. One thing I'd like to point out is that he became an Anbu Captain at age 13. Kakashi became a Jōnin at the age of 13, so technically Itachi was his boss U_U I'm sure we can all agree that Itachi is more intelligent than Kakashi, and already Itachi has achieved a higher rank than him, at the same age. Itachi has also owned Kakashi many times in battle.

I've analyzed the feats Itachi has achieved that I deemed worthy of being mentioned in this thread. If anyone dares to cross me then begin, list any amount of feats that Shikamaru has achieved, and none will match Itachi's. None.

IMO, Itachi beats Shikamaru in intelligence, all round too. He has come up with better tactics, and in seconds. Shikamaru would poop his pants if he saw Nagato's Chibaku Tensei, haha, believe me U_U

Edit: I believe that my interpretation of intelligence derives from my deep love for Philosophy. Itachi seems to me the philosophic type, and as a result of his personality I've dubbed him the most intelligent. Some of his quotes still interest me, even today. Thanks to all who read.

The way is see it is that Itachi has a much bigger arsenal of jutsus to back himself up, while Shikamaru has like 2 shadow jutsus.

It is stated in the manga that Shikamaru has I.Q of over 200 (genius, in our world, is >150), can create upto 200 strategies in his mind, and pick the best one. These feats of intelligence are unparalleled in the Narutoverse.

Firstly, Itachi has the Sharingan to see hand-seals made, positioning, Kage Bunshins etc, which enhances his analysis during battle. Shikamaru's battle strategy/planning is beyond ANY other character seen so far; just look at his fight against Temari.

Itachi's gameplan is sooo simple, yet damn effective due to the combination of jutsus he uses (MS techs, and you're done), while Shikamaru has like 2 jutsus and has been able to use that to defeat shinobi who are atleast a few levels above, and beyond him. THAT is intelligence and battle strategy.

If you measure intelligence by comparing battle stratgies employed, Shikamaru wins against any character in the Narutoverse, save for his own father (The Brain of the Leaf, Nara Shikaku).

If you measure intelligence by looking at the broader and long-term picture, Tobi (whoever he is), is EASILY the most intelligent, as no matter what happens, the guy comes out on top, so far. Obviously he'll be killed off by Naruto (with a little help from our old friend plot-no-jutsu).

Do not argue about Itachi's long-term plans as none of them worked out. People say "Die by Sasuke's hands, and give him MS" is a plan that worked out. Well, that plan was DAMN simple, as he could've just tracked Sasuke down anytime and faced off (explaining MS during fight, so Sasuke takes eyes to become more powerful). Also, people forget that making Sasuke the hero was also part of the plan- backfired big time. All he ended up doing was killing himself, and alienating his brother. Im not an Itachi hater; I just dont like it when people overestimate his abilities.

Battle Strategy - Shikamaru

Long-Term - Tobi, then Minato.

I invite all Itachi fanboys/girls to try and challenge my argument.

1. he created rashingan which is such an awsome jutsu and also worked on nature tranformation process but was sort of time. minato was like nuclear scientist of narutoverse

2.minato developed parallel space time teleportation jutsu. only 3 person ever managed to do it and minato had by far the best among them. in a way minato was like einstine working on space time theory

3. death reaper seal , most of the person cant even seal the reaper but he actually developed this jutsu himself and foiled the 9 tail attack by it so it also shows how innovative is he .

4.minato is so smart that he can develop tactics right at the blink of an eye and can counter enemy surprise attack like he defeated super smart tobi.

5.minato had vision about future hence he seal 9 tail fox in naruto to stop tobi in future similarly when he saved kushina during childhood it also shows his intellegence.
