What did Hiruzen use? He was known as the Professor and God of Shinobi with 1000 techniques. And Kishimoto is supporting this claim. I think fighting over the rooftop with barrier limit their performance, just look at Orochimaru in that scene. So I think, it's all fair, Hiruzen beat Hashirama no matter what you say unless Kishimoto disagree.
