1) Well first Madara dint have the rinnegan when he was fighting hashirama and he dint have any wood release 
but madara did have the eternal mangekyou sharingan
Madara could not predict hashirama and could not use susanoo and other eye jutsu to the full power because hashirama had this jutsu Bringer-of-Darkness Technique
Bringer-of-Darkness Technique...this technique exerts an hallucinatory effect upon the eyesight, effectively blinding the opponent. No matter how skilled an opponent may be, they are forced to wait helpless in this world of darkness, as this technique allows the user to attack unseen. Although it negates sight, it does not stop the other senses.
2) Hashirama could not die easly becase he had something more powerfull then tsunade .... he had something like this Byakugō no Jutsu and he was kind of imortal because he could regenerate very fast
Also hashirama had a very powerfull jutsu Wood Release: Advent of a World of Flowering Trees that was very famous
3) Hashirama had very good seals agains tailead beast Hokage-Style Sixty-Year-Old Technique — Kakuan Entering Society with Bliss-Bringing Hands ( he also had a scroll of seals and his wife was a uzumaki ) also he gave one beast to each vilage so he had some OP seals... so the nine tails was no problem for him
Note: hashirama was not battling alone against madara ... he seald the kyuubi in his wife mito .... so mito was somewhere in that battle ( or at least close to the battle ) because she was need it to seal the kyuubi
Conclusion: Madara had to fight hashirma in close combat and in close combat hashiarma could regenerate every hit .... the kyuubi was released from madara control and seald in mito
Hashirama beat madara because of his powers .... and madara didnt beat him because he could not use his eyes power to the full extent
