Chapter 6 - A Quick Fight
The sun was now at its highest position in the sky, signifying that the day had reached its halfway mark, as did the matches. Within the corridors of the colliseum, the thirty-two brawlers were engaging in several varied activities, mostly based upon their current status at the Smash. Those that had already faced defeat were either in the mess hall stuffing their faces or letting time slip by in their designated rooms, which weren't the most luxurious of sorts, but enough to show that their efforts to stop Tabuu's invasion five years ago were greatly appreciated. Those who had fought their way into the next round were mostly doing the same, though some could also be found training for tommorrow's brawls. Those who had yet to fight that day found themselves sitting around patiently waiting, using what time they had to train, or even eating in the mess hall, though they would caution each other to avoid overeating, as the time they might have to digest could be between a few hours and a few minutes. Nobody could be sure of when they may have to head to the arena.
Inside the rather large training area, a small number of the more serious brawlers were participating in various exercises or training activities, mostly based upon what each brawler had to offer themselves. Samus Aran and the two members of the Star Fox team were found next to a large shooting range. The six swordsmen that were present at the Smash were practicing their swordplay in their respective area of the room, either against each other or wooden posts. And on the treadmills, the two fastest brawlers at the Smash were engaging in a semi-friendly competition. Sonic and Captain Falcon were trying to see who could stay on their treadmill the longest when they were placed at maximum speed. Sonic, carefree as ever, was just beginning to break a sweat when the Captain met his limit, sending him flying off his machine. Seeing that he was victorious once again, Sonic turned both treadmills off before speeding over to Falcon and offering him his hand. Helping him off the ground, the hedgehog's cocky persona encouraged him to mock his fellow brawler.
"Game! The winner is...Son-!"
He was stopped by Falcon's palm stretched over his face, which pushed him back as the bounty hunter made his way out of the training room. Seemingly realizing he went too far, Sonic followed him out into the hallway.
"Hey Cap, come on! It was a joke-"
The Captain swirled around to face him.
"Yes, but even your favorite joke will get annoying if you hear it six times in a row! I know that I'm arrogant, but even I don't stoop to that level that often!"
"I thought we were having fun-"
"It was fun the first two times, but after the same outcome and the same attitude from the winner that many times, it starts to get on one's nerves, don't ya think?"
"Well..., just one more time and I promise I won't do it again this time."
Before Falcon could respond, the two overheard Zelda's voice on the speakers.
"The day is halfway done, but the brawls have only just begun. Whose ready for the next match-up?"
The crowd's cheers could be heard not only from the speakers, but from the stadium outside.
"Well then, our next match-up is gonna be...Sonic and Captain Falcon!"
The utter coincidence of it all left both brawlers in silence. Finally, Falcon gave Sonic an answer to his plea.
"Okay, then. We'll have another rematch, but this time, things are gonna be different."
Sonic grinned and began darting through the hallways toward the arena doors, followed shortly by the Captain.
No more than a few minutes later, the doors were letting the bright sunlight of mid-day into the corridors once again, as the two brawlers made their way onto the center arena. The crowd looked onward of the two brawlers and gave a loud cheer, which the two much appreciated, Sonic more than Falcon apparently.
"They love me, Cap. They love me."
"Well, you did effectively save the rest of us from Tabuu, if you remember. But do keep in mind that I was one of the first here. They're cheering for me just as much as they are for you."
Looking over at the young hedgehog, whose continued waves to the crowd gave the impression that he didn't hear him, the Captain merely shook his head and looked forward.
"Let's be sure to give 'em a...'quick' fight, eh Cap?"
The bounty hunter looked back over to him with an indifferent expression.
"That wasn't even remotely funny...and I intend to."
The crowd's cheers were silenced as the two took their positions and the referee hovered closer to the arena, ready to begin the match.
"3, 2, 1, GO!"
Being young and quick to act, Sonic was the first to make a move, charging at full speed towards the Captain. Waiting until he was within attacking distance, Falcon performed a reversed somersault into the air, causing Sonic to stop and look at him, not antipicating his next move.
"Falcon Kick!"
Bringing his leg down with such force that flames formed around his body, the attack hit Sonic dead-on, sending him back a few feet. His breaths having deepened, Sonic stood up as the Captain addressed him.
"Too fast for you?"
The hedgehog continued to stand there, as if mesmerized.
"Hey, I said things were gonna be different. This isn't the race track anymore, Sonic. Speed won't help you much here. Trust me, I know."
Seeing that he would have to rethink his strategy, Sonic straightened up and moved to the other side of the arena, hoping to get enough time to think of one. Being as quick-witted as he was quick-footed, he didn't take long. Immediately, he darted towards the Captain at sonic speed, waiting until they were in arms-distance of each other before changing direction and beginning to form a circle around his opponent. Seemingly having caught on, Falcon began rapidly pivoting his head in order to see every angle of his surroundings.
"The boy's not half bad, but he should've reminded himself of who he was fighting before he went with such a predictable method."
Unfortunately, the Captain did not predict that Sonic would break off from his path directly in front of him. Somewhat set off by the unusual attack, he hesitated, allowing Sonic to leap into the air and plow his feet into Falcon's chest, sending him flying to the other end of the arena. The Captain barely held his footing as he slid to the very edge of the stadium, managing a grin once he found himself able to stand up straight again.
"I'll be honest, I expected you to attack from the back or the side. That was a rather risky move attacking head-on, but it seems to have paid off. Don't think it'll happen again, though."
Sonic could only look at the bounty hunter and form a grin of his own. His confidence had obviously just peaked. It was practically showing. A chuckle left Falcon's mouth, but within the next second, his smile vanished and he began darting towards Sonic. Pulling his clenched fist back, he thrusted forward to hit the hedgehog, but he had already moved behind him and was now charging up for a Spin Dash. Seeing the small window of time he now had, the Captain stood in preparation to counter-attack. Knowing the level of speed that Sonic would be moving at, he waited until right before he launched his attack to initiate his own.
"Falcon...Punch!"
Timed perfectly, his attack overpowered Sonic's and sent him flying across the arena. The crowd gave a loud cheer of excitement for this opportunity to catch a glimpse of one of the more beloved attacks in the Smash's history. Not intending to give his opponent a chance to regather his strength, Captain Falcon sprinted towards him in an effort to push him over the edge, literally. Sonic, who saw him approaching, immediately pulled out a spring and jumped on it, sending him soaring into the air. The Captain, who recognized Sonic's method, knew that he could also make use of the spring and followed him into the air, only to be kicked from above by the hedgehog. Seeing the position that he was in, the bounty hunter suddenly realized that Sonic had planned for this as the spring pushed him back into the air towards his opponent, who proceeded to kick him again, repeating the cycle until he was too close to the ground. Using Captain Falcon as a platform to jump out of the way of the spring, he waited until his opponent was close to the ground and leaped into the air as he did before, drilling both of his feet into the Captain's chest. Already exhausted from the elongated pummeling he had received, Falcon could do nothing as he rolled over the edge of the stadium. Using whatever strength remained, he found himself able to grab ahold of the edge with one hand, though the ability to pull himself up was all but gone. He looked on as Sonic walked over to him, ready to end the fight completely. With great effort, he managed to give Sonic one last lecture.
"Well,...I'm waiting. Where's that little dance you...*cough*...do when you win?"
Sonic managed a small smile as he grabbed ahold of the Captain's fingers to pry them away from the arena edge.
"I told you I wouldn't do that this time."
Falcon smiled back in respect as the hedgehog released his fingers, sending him drifting into the abyss. The crowd erupted into cheer as Sonic stood back up, the referee now confirming the match's outcome.
"Game! The winner is...Sonic!"
Staying true to his word, Sonic made no gestures or noises to exaggerate his victory, and simply stood by waiting for the Captain to reappear. Certainly enough, the hoverboard appeared after a few minutes, carrying the exhausted brawler. Helping him to his feet as he did before, the two made their way to the corridor entrance as Sonic spoke up.
"It was a quick fight though, wasn't it?"
Falcon couldn't help but chuckle this time as the doors closed behind them.
