When Madara & Hashirama fought, Madara lost but during the battle he was severely inflicted with a senju technique that put him in the brink of death.
Strugling to survive..he would realize something...There was a change happening to him..within him..inside his body. The Jutsu that hashirama used to deliver the final blow that severed Madara's body left a radiating & unique sensation, then he realize that his Uchiha body was able to adapt the healing factor that Hashirama was using during their battle...and it was slowly bringing the life back at him..on this very moment, he activated his RINNEGAN.
After the activation of his new Dojutsu he would decipher the secrets of the Sage of Six Paths...learning the secrets Jutsus and formulated a Plan to get back the power of the Jibu..to be its Jinjuriki..The Moon Eye Plan...but i order to do this he needs more power to counter the possibility of a shinobi alliance waiting to happen & would stand against him.
After completely recovering he devise an initial plan to erase the shinobi that he considered the greatest threat to him..HASHIRAMA.
He sent a secret message to Hashirama, telling him about a sinister plan that he formulated to convince the hokage to duel with him in secret. Hashirama knew that he might not comback alive this time so he past on the title of Hokage to his younger brother..Tobirama.
When they fought for the 2nd time. Madara won..but something went terribly wrong with his plan. Hashirama was able to put up a galant stand that resulted to him having fatally wounded Madara.
Madara out of desperation used the CREATION OF ALL THINGS to split Hashirama into three entities. These entities would became what we know now as White Zetsu. Black Zetsu..and Tobi.
But Madara was not finished with this..refusing to give up on his plan..before he took his last breath, he use creation of all things to himself.. splitting his power into two..the first half on his dying body, the other half infusing HIMSELF to tobi..to carry out his devised plan that included him later being revived by tobi using the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique.
