The sage of the six paths, have learned and trained everything on his own.
But he wasnt not only powerfull, he was a good boy (more than tobi xD)
You cant compare him with naruto or kabuto because of the 2 different sage modes.
He has all of the six paths, that not only mean that he can controll all elements, its everything, see at google; spiritual flows of nature, the 6 paths are the main grps of all being.
But what i can say, the personality of naruto, its similar to so6p and that means the true power.
Back to the topic,
He had no study with someone, he was the first to realize that flow of nature.
And the sage itself, is a title.

Kabuto as the SO6P is no longer an option, The time of Kabuto is over it was short it was dismal.
nice pick he sure did have horn like shape.. so maybe he was true dragon 
kabuto is closest thing to sage right now, even including naruto and madara.. maybe due coz as we know sage invented ninshu and all about it everyone follow his gift to ninja world and kabuto did obtain countless dna from oro experiments thro-ought the years.

How do you know it's not a Headband of any kind? True, Villages were non-existant since then. (ALTHOUGH, In Blood Prison there was a mention of Grass Village in the SO6P era, so maybe some villages were there already.)

Probably achieved inner peace & praying to what ever deities they have in the narutoverse chose him as the one to lead/save mankind granting him the rinnegan & wisdom
But I doubt he trained like them more like meditation at the falls of truth... From the looks of things samurai was around during the sages time (the sage was either a priest or samurai possibly both)
