to my understanding kabutos eyes are closed & in his sage form he is able to see through the eyelids which makes me wonder if this is how a byakugan user would nullify sharingan genjutsu.

ps. you see his eyes in some parts maybe because his eyes are glowing through the lids and/or its to represent that he is seeing and not only sensing.

Because Kabuto basically has sun glasses over his eyes. That is the point I'm making here. So how is that shielding him from being caught in an genjutsu when that same thing didn't work for Bee at all. We know Kabuto's eyes are not closed because you can see his eye behind the shades that cover them.

Also this here tells you his eyes are not closed.

He was basically just shading his eyes from the light so he could freely.

Simple.
Naruto didn't even look in the eyes of Itachi when they confronted each other at the start of Shippuden series and yet through flick of finger he fell.
Bee stared in Itachi's eyes directly, so he also fell in Genjutsu.
While Kabuto has a lot of knowledge about Saringan, he got himself a new tech to block himself from staring directly in the eyes of Itachi. Further in Sage mode, everything is different. He can sense Itachi and also has that snakey thing by his side. Well Kabuto is a sneaky bastard after all..
