Yes, Nagato got called got in he's little village. Hashirama was called the strongest shinobi in the world (Not stronger than Rikudou Sennin, of course).

And again, he didnt got beaten, he got sealed. If that fight would been in Shippuden, i'm sure we would seen more of Hashirama, Tobirama and more of what the Third Hokage's technique.

through hype of the manga i was gonna but team hashi; but through moves and logic of what we have seen i picked team itachi for these main reseasons:
hasirama and madara and even jiraya have little knowledge of what the rinnegan can do and that some actually posses it. (maybe madra might since it ment to be his and tobi's)

madara ems has not shown any unique moves which itachi cant do and relys on the rinnegan more when fighting the kages showng the viewers it more effect the his old eyes.

With him being a equal to hasirama in there prime this shows that rinnegan makes him stronger then when they where in the prime leading to nagato being stronger as he is a master of the rinnegan.

minato passed jiraiya before his death with ftg from what we know but j man still has sage mode
