Kakashi gained MS through the grief he suffered over an extended period of time. Its not confirmed when or exactly how he gained MS, but this is the assumed explanation. We know that Sasuke unlocked MS after being told the truth about Itachi, so its not the killing of your best friend that actually unlocks it but rather a period of extreme emotion. Based on this theory, its assumed that Kakashi unlocked it at some point over the timeskip where he was feeling an extreme amount of grief.

You don't unlock mangekyo sharingan by killing your best friend. You unlock it by experiencing the death of someone close to you. It could be a friend, it could be your sibling, or one of your parents.

While technically yes, you can kill your best friend and unlock MS (like Itachi did), it was the pain, saddness, loss, and suffering after the fact that unlocked it. Not the act of killing him.

And in much the same way, I am pretty sure Rinnegan becomes unlocked. Possibly through a different set of emotions though. Shame, hatred, desperation, loathing, insanity.

Kakashi feels as though he is responsible for Obito's death and that he could have done something to save him.

Kakashi would never kill his friend in order to gain more power. Didn't Tobi said you can gain the Mangekyou also through hard training? Anyway, Kakashi isn't an Uchiha, he has awakened a whole different technique unlike the Uchihas so I think he is a special case.

can i have evidence where it says that they didnt kill their best friends?i recall seeing in the anime that they showed shadows falling behind them and achieving MS after the shadows died ( most possible their best friends)

I have seen this thread by two different people before and the acer has ben the same, No Kakashi has not kill any of His friends at all. And yet this thread is going to close and somebody will bring it back and still get the same acer NO. Jut because the some Uchiha have taken the easy way to get the power it is not the only way continues use of the eye will develop it's power in day to day combat over time.

You don't have to kill a person in order to obtain a Mangekyou. But when it comes to Eternal Mangekyou, you need another pair of MS eyes. Still don't have to kill someone.

technically kakashi's current best friend is guy and guy is still alive. he got ms from hard training

this I can agree with because when Sasuke and Itachi were fighting Itachi, Itachi was talking about Madara and how he and his brother always fought until they gained the ms and it was all done through hard work which is what I think Kakashi did. :izuna:
