He leaves his readers wondering how the hell something happened and never goes back to explain it.

Maybe its the saame reason why Madara knows him: Madara saw Uzumaki's as threat(plus he would hate Mito Uzumaki for helping Hashirama), so he asked Nagato to wipe out the Uzumaki village

Now that would be an interesting plot twist. Nagato could have definitely destroyed the Uzamaki village with that tech +rep

Yeah yeah yeah. Maybe Madara was about to die. So in other to keep his legacy alive, he and Tobi or who would become Tobi went to the Uzumaki village. Madara selected someone to get his eyes. He then sent two White Zetsus desguised as Konoha ninja in Nagato's house. He had them kill Nagato's parents and when Nagato came in contact with them, he got Rinnegan. He then passed out. Tobi transported him to safety and Madara, in the moment where he was about to die, summoned a meteor to destroy the country, killing himself in the process and extracting his plan of getting revenge on Mito Uzumaki and cooling some rage against the Uzumaki in one action.

The other paths didn't show any sign of weakness when he used it on a smaller scale, and Konan seems to imply that he's used it to such a scale before

I know he was constantly fighting back in the old days, but that large of a Shinra Tensei is TBB large, and it seems excessive

I'm pretty sure he had used it before during his battle with Hanzo or another previous battle. Either that or he has practiced it before to perfect the Jutsu. As to why it most likely seems 'weaker' to Konan now is because as we've seen near the end of the Pein fight, Nagato is actually falling apart and didn't have much time left anyways. For him, it was most likely the best he could push out considering his body was dying.
