Chapter One: Wish Upon A Star

The young man woke suddenly; the room was black, lit softly by the starlight filtering through the windows; judging by the brightness of the moon, and the blackness of the backdrop it was nestled in, dawn was still far away.

The boy sat up from the bed, shaking his head, sending his shaggy dark brown hair tussling, as he took his hand and rubbed his eyes, fighting away weariness – much had happened in the last few months, and he didn’t think he was in the state of mind to examine what had happened to him quite yet, not when a full day lay before him that he could dwell on it, when he should be resting now.

He stood up and slipped his feet into a pair of straw sandals, as he slipped quietly from his room into the foyer, and then into the courtyard in the center of the tea house he was residing at for the moment.

It was quiet; the sky was lit by glistening golden droplets of starlight, and the precious silver disk that was the moon; despite how late it was, it was easy enough to see. His feet touched down with only a slight scuffling as he walked across the cobblestone to a wooden bench that sat underneath a cherry-blossom tree, next to a coy-fish pond; the sound of the wind rustling the leaves, the quite chirping of the crickets, the rhythmic tapping of a bamboo chute as it trickled water slowly into the pond, and the pleasant stillness of the night were the orchestra on this evening…

Sitting down on the bench to prepare himself, he placed a scabbard on his lap, a beautiful dark-wood piece that was very simple, capped with bronze on both the bottom and the blade-guard, both with ornate carvings of the sea and sky, respectively; grasping the hilt of the katana that rested inside, the boy pulled on the blade, revealing the silvery instrument to the night sky; sapphire eyes reflected back at him from within the blade.

Standing up, he completely drew the blade from the scabbard, holding the black-cloth-wrapped hilt in his hands, as the hexagonal tsuba sat loosely above his hand, the cool feeling of the blade and its weight in his hand putting him at ease. The blade’s mirror finish reflected the stars in the sky, as if showcasing its name sake: Nagareboshi; Shooting Star.

As he worked through his forms, the gentle swish of his sword through the air reminded him of the beautiful landscape he was traveling through; he was currently on the road, heading for the capital city of Eve: Aegis, the City of Eden.

The hours were lost to practice, as the sun slowly rose over the horizon.

“Did you sleep well, Master Keotsu?” asked the young teahouse owner, as she brought the traveling boy a small pastry and a cup of tea, when he walked outside the main building; adorned in khaki colored pants, a set of travel sandals, and a navy blue gi with a white undershirt, with Nagareboshi straddling his right hip; he looked the part of a young Ronin, especially with his straw hat hanging from his back.

Keotsu graciously accepted the meal from his hostess, “Yes, I did – thank you for your hospitality.” Having paid for the room and meal the night before with two silver coins, he still had plenty of money to make his way to the capital; he ate his meal, said his goodbyes and thanks to the tea-maiden, and left down the road, heading southwest towards the Capital.

The weather was beautiful this time a year; it was early autumn, and so the trees lined the road with brilliant golds and reds, leaves scattering and twisting on the winds like flickering embers; the fields of grain like waves of gold as every movement of air was portrayed – the deep blue sky housed a few cottony clouds that floated by idly, without a care in the world.

It was hard to believe that he had already been traveling for four months. It had all happened so quickly, and without warning – none of it made any sense.

As he traveled down the road his mind slipped back to the incident four months ago, playing the events of that day over in his mind, once more….
