Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is a video game title encompassing three versions: a full-3D action game for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Microsoft Windows and Wii; a 2.5D sidescrolling action game for PlayStation Portable and PlayStation 2, and a 2.5D side-scrolling brawler/platformer for the Nintendo DS.
Plot
Strange events begin to occur in New York City and Spider-Man is the first to notice. What was thought to be an infection turned out to be an invasion.
One of Spider-Man's greatest foes, Venom, has learned that he can clone himself using the very symbiote suit he wears. These clones form hives or pods in many parts of the city. From these hives, they launch an invasion against the citizens of the city. Soon everyone succumbs to the symbiotes and they become symbiote zombies. S.H.I.E.L.D. intervenes and quarantines Manhattan, sealing it off to keep the invasion from spreading.
Before long, Spidey becomes infected himself after confronting Venom and regains his old symbiotic costume. He teams up with the city's greatest heroes and villains who are fighting the invasion themselves. Spider-Man must stop Venom before he himself falls under the control of the symbiote suit that possessed him before.
Features
Like Treyarch's previous Spider-Man games, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3 and Ultimate Spider-Man, the game will allow free-roaming action, and players will be able to customize and choose Spider-Man's aerial and ground combat. For the first time in a Spider-Man game, the player will be able to choose the game's outcome and Spider-Man's path, similarly to games like Mass Effect. There are multiple endings depending on how the game is played out.
In addition, the player will decide which villain to fight against. The player will be able to switch between the original red and blue suit, and the Symbiote suit at any time during gameplay, although the games Ultimate Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 similar features. It has also been confirmed that Spider-Man will be able to swim in the water instead of dying automatically in certain games, Spider-Man simply climbs back out of the water. Chris Scholz from Shaba Games also commented that they worked on really separating the black and red suits to give the player a different feel. Such as: Red & Blue-suited Spider-Man will be fast and agile, while Symbiote Spider-Man will be stronger and more destructive such as picking up and throw cars, or destroy building fronts. The mini map on the screen will also change. The traditional 2-D eagle eye will be removed, replaced by a new 3D map with an "X", "Y" and "Z" axis which shows your current location. It has also been confirmed that the players actions have a direct consequence on the ending and outcome of Spider-Man's fate depending on which suit you use and whatever actions you take will cause either Spider-Man's greatest enemies or allies to side with him. The PSP & PS2 versions have been confirmed to be 2.5D side scrollers.
