Using Dolphins to detect underwater mines may seem crazy, but if it works it works. :p

Ahh the Navy never ceases to amaze me. Long as It's a dolphin being blown up instead of a ship with 30k people on it. But they say Dolphins are smart??

The dolphins don't get blown up, the detect the mines and mark them so the Navy can get rid of them safely.

Wow duly noted. In some situations it could happen, Mistakes can be made you know, I'm sure not all of them will survive one or a few will end up dying.

Matter of opinion. I would rather see a dolphin dead than hundreds of people on a ship. That's speaking in a what if situation.

Very true, the article points out that the dolphins are big enough to set off the mines and that its a real threat. It also brings up that enemy combatants may start indiscriminately killing off dolphin populations just to be safe.

Seems like a double edged sword.

I agree 100%. I mean either way we go with it in some way someone or something is gonna be harmed. I wonder if Iran is capable of doing that, I mean when it comes to Naval power we have them beat, not to mention we have saved 2 of their ships that have been in danger.

Going around, I see this ending badly for all parties involved.

I can't make sense of this? Considering how the humans will be using them, yeah some are gonna die :|

It's not just warships that are in danger but international shipping vessels are also effected. And I don't know much about how Iran will used the mines. Tethered mines are okay because the are pretty much stationary. It's the free floating mines ya gotta worry about.

Mines typically are designed to sense metal objects.... Dolphins are not metal.

The second kind of mine is pressure sensitive. If the dolphin never touches it the dolphin never dies.

No human or machine could match the dolphin in finding mines and not being killed.
