Have we ever seen Itachi in his prime(not counting edo)? -Nope,
I have no personal opinion on this one because I dont even know what to expect from Gai,
as for Itachi I can make an estimated guess but 0 on Gai. It's like making EMS Sasuke threads while we don't know what EMS Sasuke is capable of >.>.

but then again, susano'o isn't an absolute defense, as it was broken by 4th raikage several times. A lightning jutsu of kirin's scale and magnitude would most likely have broken through an incomplete susanoo. the yata mirror was shown so that the readers would know that with the sword of totsuka and yata mirror, that he becomes invincible.

If i recall correctly, if you use ALL eight gates you...I don't know. Die?

So technically, if he does kill Itachi, he dies. So it would be a tie regardless because Itachi managed to bring Gai down with him.

Gai cannot survive all eight gates. I do not know why people say Gai wins if he has to use all Eight Gates.
