How did Itachi kill off his entire family and clan, without a second thought? I understand HOW he killed them, with a ninja tool, but how did he bring himself to it? As smart as Itachi is, you would think he would come up with a plan, am i wrong? He's one of the smartest characters in the series, surely he could of thought his way around it. I also understand that it was a mission for "peace", but come on that's his family. He was crying while he was completing the mission. (aside from letting sasuke live.) How and why did he do it?

Apparently people don't pay attention to the anime/manga; It's been stated that Itachi had assistance in the Uchiha Massacre from Tobi. They made a deal.

tobi and and the elders might have helped
The former (Tobi) helping Itachi in the Uchiha Massacre's been confirmed already. The latter (elders) intervening has neither been confirmed nor is likely - it's more probable that they didn't get their hands dirty. After all, it was Itachi's personal mission from the Leaf.

Help most likely. I still don't think we got the full story of the Uchiha massacre. Maybe Madara will reveal this later on in the manga
I hope so. There has to be more behind it. He couldnt have loved konoha that much, to kill off his family. Now as nagato2 had stated, i could see him not wanting his clan looked at as a clan that revolts against its village, but like i said, he's smart, he could of figured something out.

16 years ago, tobi attacked the village with the kyuubi. Itachi then was still a child and many people were killed before his eyes on that age. So he hates war more than anyone else. Then when he got older he gotten a strong shinobi, a spy from the Uchiha and a spy from Konoha. He saw the conflict between Uchiha and Konoha, his own father was starting a plan to fight against konoha. This means death on both sides. I gues he knew Uchiha wouldn't stand much of a chance against the overgrown Konoha. That's why he killed his own clan, to stop the unnecesary deaths on konoha side. He chose wisely, but betrayed his own clan. Otherwhise their would've been much more deaths.

lol. You're missing the question. I like you have already realized that he had help, and that it was indeed "Tobi" who helped him, but my question is how did Itachi bring himself to do it....?

Okay, this make's sense. It still puzzles me why he would kill his ENTIRE clan though, and not just his father. I mean, one is better than all of them. Then he could go to the funeral, and claim he died of natural cases or whatever he comes up with, then call off the attack on Konoha. Like i have said a million times, Itachi is smart enough to come up with a plan like this. Of course one without flaws, cause im sure mine has quite a few, but you get my point right? lol.

The only thing is say to that is this. Depending on who Tobi "NO ONE" Uchiha is, depends on how the Uchiha massacre actually went.

1:Tobi is "Madara Uchiha". Would not make sense because Madara would not necessary help kill off his entire clan with Itachi, mean while helping Konoha out by stopping the Coup de tat. He would rather destroy the other group and take the village for himself.

2:Tobi is "Shisui Uchiha". Would and would not make sense. If Shisui was actually on the Uchiha side as once thought it would not make sense. If Shisui was on Itachi's(Konoha) side then it would make possible sense.

3:Tobi is "Obito Uchiha". Could easily make sense because Obito is presumed dead. This is only possible if Obito in some way formed hatred for the Uchiha clan from whatever.

4:Tobi is "Kagami Uchiha". Could easily make sense because not much is known about Kagami. He is in the same generation of the "elders" who we know had a hand in it, and he is presumed dead or MIA.

With all that said, I think Itachi could go through with it because he had wisdom. To be ruled over with power in fear is not free. So we would take the burden upon himself, die a criminal, and at the same time get rid of the possibility the elder brother would win and rule. He just couldn't kill Sasake, and maybe Sasake was in the deal.

You kill your rebellious clan, and you and your brother are saved. Or you all die including your brother. Etc.
