I don't think that the Zetsu we see is a creation from another original Zetsu. He is the monster that most Akatsuki members were thought up to be. Zetsu's ability is creating clones of himself. He even states that his clone will guide him when splitting apart to lead Taka to the Five Kage Summit.

The black Zetsu creates white Zetsu clones. We most surely see a Zetsu-like arm come off of Tobi when it was infected with Torune's bugs. Which also feeds to the theory that Zetsu can clone and create body parts that are fuseable with another Shinobi. (possibly feeding the tobi=zetsu clone theory)

IMO Zetsu didn't come around until Tobi started interfereing with the original Akatsuki that was created by Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan.

Edo Madara also states that he awakened his Rinnegan shortly before his death. Logically he wouldn't have had enough time to experiment as you state.

about zetsu, it's true that he is a monster, but also he is weak, he isn't that strong as the other akatsuki members, as stated by tobi himself, zetsu is not the batle type, he is the spy and sensor of the group.
I'm aware of the tobi=zetsu clone theory and it is the one I favour after my own, the problem I see with that is that I just feel like madara would not put his faith into a shinobi he ran into that is capable of copying people. I feel he was purpously created. his ability's are perfect for creating an army that can take on the world to distract them. and I suspect that madara was aware that he would need someone like that, it would just be realy fortunate for madara if such a shinobi was walking around and could be manipulated into doing years of work to get madara back and enslave the world.

if we can belive tobi's story he was a motivator for the creation of akatsuki at the hands of yahiko. nagato was at that point already more then capable of using his rinnegan, so at that point in time, the real madara must have already been dead and tobi must have been around. so even in the tobi=zetsu clone theory zetsu must already have been around that time.

and about madara not having much time to experiment after awaking the rinnegan, I suppose that's true, but if you read my post you will notice that madara already perfected the dna manipulation technique on himself befor awaking the rinnegan. possibly (but can't be sure) he already created the tobi body and only needed the rinnegan's ability's to bring it to life. my theory also explains the similarity's that zetsu and tobi have, the white zetsu like arm that tobi kickes off after being infected with the bugs. the quick "instalation" of new body parts, even the quick adaptation of his body to a new set of eye's. from what I read in the manga I think it all fits

I believe it Danzo who playing Tobi. Some arguments
First he become the 6th Hokage in order to steal the information he need to do the moon Jutsu that require Sharigan. SO sending Pain to attack the village would be the best way. Then get kill so he can start the great war and capture the last 2 tail beast.
Second why wear a mask unless it so well known but in the ninja world there almost no one else who have the eyes.
Third why kill the uchida Clan so he can steal all the Sharigan for himself. I mean you did see all the Sharigan eyes he have right? He also wanted pain eyes and how he have it if he is Tobi. And yes he kill the clan because he is in charge of the ANBU special forces.
Forth, Why would Itachi join the group that causing all of this trouble? Well from his action he want to save his brother and the village. What better way then to watch out and make sure Danzo not do anything with Atatski to harm his brother or the village.
Fifth, think back to when Naruto was born the location was suppose to be a secret and only the ANBU was assign to protect Naruto mother when she give birth, but somehow Tobi know about it one way was he assign the people to protect her and then goes and steal the tail beast in order to cause so much damage...The question is why because he needed to get rid of the forth and his wife. They have perfect control over the tail beast if Tobi not steal it then he did not see how he ever have another chance.
Finally, Some people tell me I am crazy he dead so how can he be Tobi. Do not forget this is the ninja world where everyone is fooling everyone. What better way to accomplish so much then to be dead or make everything think you dead. If he make a clone or something then he can scarfice it or even better be close by so when Sasake strike him down he can uses his jutsu and change out Tobi ability to make his body part not there can survive Sasake attack and do all of this in the shadow. Also people often think someone who disable as not dangerous so he walk around with a cane but that so easy to uses as a trick.
My question is all of this to destroy the world or unite them all? Cause of him all of the Ninja clan are working together and realizing a world of peace. Also taking all of the tail beast would insure that no one can uses them to threaten other nation anymore.

I don't believe that Tobi is an uchiha at all. . . My reasoning for this is the mask that he wears which hid one of his sharingan till his mask was broken by konan. . . since uchihas value their eyes and hold them above all others they don't hide them but display them proudly. . . so to hide one would be unheard of if he was an uchiha. . . so much like others that have acquired a sharingan eye the person covers them up to conserve their energy. . . tobi obviously has high stamina since he had two sharingan but not enough to where the wear on his energy wouldn't be so great that he could always display both eyes much like a true uchiha. . . think of when he met up with kabuto and said that fighting him would use up way too much energy. . . and i don't believe he had senju dna until after getting the rinnegan since now he displays both eyes. . . showing no concern over the drain of the energy that both eyes would put on his non uchiha body. . . just my thoughts on this. . . when its revealed who he is i hope it causes that oooooooooooooooooooh that makes sense type feeling though lol but would also like to see a new character. . . if it must be an uchiha i hope its sasukes dad. . . i know supposed to be dead but how easy is that to fake with a genjutsu as well as having zetsu clones around. . . would also explain why itachi would want sasuke to burn him with amaterasu so he never sees his dads face and be left with an even worse mental breakdown then before. . .

At this point I really don't care who it is anymore... It's been going on too long now... I think it might be Madara's brother... I have a feeling based on how things look to be going... that it may be someone who either Naruto or Bee recognise.

I still thinks its obito for a few reason...the wearing of the mask only showing his left eye and never actually seeing him die. He could of been saved easily by someone stronger. Obito would have a perfect reason to be doing all this cause war is what almost killed him and I would assume killed his love rin or whatever her name was. My assumption is since madara said in the manga he lived long and would have been around when obito so called died, he could have saved him some how by adding zetsu to his crushed body and then training to continue his work after he dead. A little proof of this is when madara is talking to kabuto in the manga he ask him if he knows of "our" plan meaning he was purpose to brough back by tobi or by using nagato rinnigan. I'm new to this so this is just my observation watching the show and also reading the manga.
