Chapter 4: Moving On

Sorry the start is a little rough, but cleaning up a mess really is never fun. It does pick up though. I hope you enjoy and thank you for taking the time to read this.

Once the adrenaline died down, Gabriel’s stomach became queasy. His body began to tremble as realization had hit him; he took another person’s life. His hands would be forever stained with blood and he would no longer see the world the same again. The wind blew gently, in a comforting way at first, and then wafting the scent of death back into his nose. He cringed, as the smell alone was enough to push over the queasy feeling in his stomach. He rolled onto his knees as he emptied the contents of his stomach.

Once his stomach was feeling stable again, he stood to his feet, whipping his chin with the back of his hand. His throat ached now and his eyes were seeing spots, but he closed them as he tried to pull himself back together. He shook his head a few times then opened his eyes. He felt normal again now that his emotions weren’t fueling his ambitions and the smell of the corpses wasn’t bothering him anymore.

He glanced back at his father; his features were lifeless and pale, while his body was stained with so much blood. It was hard for Gabriel to accept the fact that his father would never train or lecture him again. Before the memories could try to invade his mind, a sudden thought plagued his mind. “Where’s mom?” He panicked as he quickly turned on his heel.

He rushed over to the lifeless bodies, turning each one over, trying to find his mom. He would shatter into millions of little pieces if his mom were amongst the dead bodies here. He shook his head roughly, trying to fight back the taunting thoughts that were trying to break his spirit. He approached the last body and turned it over with trembling hands, just to let out a sigh of relief, it wasn’t his mom. He smiled softly, new hope brimming in his mind of his mom still being alive, but where?

As that thought processed into his mind, he studied the area, looking for any sign of where his mother could possibly be. Hoping she was hiding in a safe area and would pop out at any moment. He held his breathe as he quickly ran into the houses, looking for his mom desperately, but there was no sign of her. His hope had been crushed as he slowly walked back out of the house. He knew it was too good to be true and anxiety began to bubble up inside him. Those evil thoughts of what could be worse than death, started to take over his mind.

He shook his head, trying to rid the thoughts, but stopped when he noticed footprints leading towards the woods. He walked next to them and once he came to the entrance of the woods, they disappeared into the cloak of darkness. Gabriel placed his hand to his chin, in a thinking manner. “Seems like I will have to go through these woods, but it’s much too dangerous at night.” He turned to the bodies that still littered the ground, “Besides, I still need to give them a proper memorial for their passing.” He said softly as he slowly walked back towards the corpses.

He dragged the bodies into a pit, their final resting place. The bodies were much too heavy for him to pick up as trying to keep a firm hold on their cool skin was just as much trouble as moving dead weight. He avoided looking at the wounds that had caused their death, each even more gruesome than the one before it. Gabriel even flinched when he grabbed a body and a throwing knife was through the man’s eye and buried deep into his eye socket. “Oh that’s gross.” Gabriel said as he tried to stop himself from gagging at the mere sight of it.

Once all the bodies were lying side by side in the resting area, he grabbed a shovel and tossed dirt over their bodies. It wasn’t deep enough to prevent the smell of the dead from seeping through, but it was the best he could do at the moment. He said a few prayers so that their souls would rest in peace and then turned to see the one body he hadn’t buried; his father’s. He walked over to where the dry wood was holding up the axe from his encounter with the crazed man, and stacked them into a neat pile on the only dry ground he could find.

After a few moments of building a wooden fort it seemed, he placed his father on top, struggling to hold up his lifeless body. Once his father was secured on top of the piles of wood and he was certain that his father wouldn’t slide off, he crossed his father’s hands over his chest in a resting manner and then set the wood ablaze with the help of a lot of gasoline and matches.

Gabriel sat on the ground and watched as the flames licked hungrily at his father’s flesh, slowly burning the layers off. The smoke quickly rose as the stench of burning flesh and hair filled the air. He covered his mouth and nose with his hand, but kept his sad eyes on his father as the fire was eating away the man he wanted to be like. He couldn’t take it anymore; the smell was becoming too strong for him. He stood to his feet, paying his last respects and assuring his father that he would become the man that he was and take revenge on the person who caused this, before taking his leave.

The next morning, Gabriel woke and groggily walked over to the window to see the surrounding snow had put out the fire. He took haste in packing a bag of necessities, after changing into some fresh clothes and washing up. He gathered all the valuables he could for his trip to search for his missing mother. He came across a crumbled up note that was stuffed into the dresser of his mom and dad’s drawer, where they hid all their money, and picked it up to read it.

His eyes widen as he realized that it was the same piece of paper his father was reading yesterday morning at the table. “He knew.” Gabriel stuttered out in surprised as he angrily crumbled up the paper. “How could he have known and this still happened!” Gabriel yelled as he tossed his bag onto the bed in a frustrated manner. Rage was boiling up in his veins as he paced back and fourth, trying to calm down at the new information he had learned. Having tossed the crumbled up paper some time in between paces, he dug his fingernails into his palms angrily.

“There were only two assassin’s and they still couldn’t take them on!” He yelled out as he punched the mirror in anger, letting the mirror shatter into pieces as it fell to the ground. Gabriel pushed the dresser to the floor, joining the shards of glass that were lying there. He was letting his anger out as he mourned, “I thought you were better than this dad! I thought you were an expert swordsman! You knew and you still couldn’t kill two assassins!” The crashing sound from the dresser colliding against the floor filled the air. Gabriel turned for his bag and grabbed it, not wanting to look back as he walked out of the house, leaving the life and his anger that he had behind him.

He trudged through the thick forest as quickly as he could, marking the tree bark with a single slash so he wouldn’t get lost. It only took him a few hours to bob and weave through the obstacles the forest had offered him, but once he was free, a small run down town greeted him. He held his father’s sword close to his body as he kept his pack with his valuables just as close.

His stomach let out a loud rumble in protest as the smell of grilled meats filled the air. He placed a hand on his stomach as the scent of the food teased him some more. He looked to see an inn and sniffed the air, following the trail it was leaving, luring him into the small building. He struggled to open the large door, but seemed to push his body weight against it to gain access into the inn. Once he walked through and the door slammed shut behind him, everyone looked up giving him menacing glares.

Gabriel ignored the glares as his stomach growled again and he spotted an empty chair at the bar. He slowly dragged his feet towards the bar where the bartender was cleaning the glasses as the sweet aroma of food told him he was moving closer towards the kitchen. “What do you want child?” The bar tender sneered, not wanting to assist Gabriel at all.

“I want to eat here.” Gabriel said as he reached for a chair, but was stopped by a shady looking fellow.

“Sorry but that’s my chair.” The man said as he pushed Gabriel to the ground.

“Is that necessary?” A female voice came from the shadows of the dim lit bar. “The boy is hungry, let him eat.” She continued in a nonchalant tone.

“Who asked you witch?” Another guy sneered as he went to go reach for Gabriel’s pack.

The woman chugged the rest of her beer as she tossed a throwing knife into the man’s hand without even aiming. The bulky man screamed out in agony as he grabbed the other side of the knife and withdrew it from his flesh. A gash could be seen through his hand as blood splattered onto the floor. “Don’t touch the boy.” She said in a child like tone, a grin plastered across her child like face.

“You will pay for that you bit-“ Before the man could finish his statement; the woman kicked her chair into the air, which made contact with his face. He stumbled backwards and fell harshly onto the floor.

The woman stood on top of the table, twirling a knife in between her fingers without even scratching her soft skin. “Anyone else want a go?” She asked as her dark blue eyes sparkled with mischief.

Two more thugs stood and rushed over to aid the man that was lying on the ground. “That was our boss you witch! Men, attack her!” One of the men, who were tending to his boss’s wounds, shouted towards a corner of the bar where a group of large men sat.

The woman let out a nervous laugh as she saw the 6 foot tall men line up in front of her, their muscles bulky and more than enough to crush the tiny 5 feet 3 inch woman that stood before them. She rubbed the back of her neck nervously, her strawberry blonde hair tied up in a tight bun. “Guys let’s not be too rash!” She said as she waved her hands in front of her in a nervous fashion. “Can’t we talk about this?”

“You should have thought twice about that before you threw a knife into my hand!” The boss of the thugs screamed out in agony as a ramble of curses came after it.

One of the thugs leapt forward, making the woman flip off the table gracefully and throwing the knife she held in her hand at his forehead, making him fall to the floor as it pierced through his skull. The woman stood there, same mischievous grin on her face as two more thugs charged her from either side of the table. She spread her legs and forced herself down into a split as she punched each of the men in the groin, making them instantly back off and cry in pain.

Another thug charged at her and she dodged skillfully. She looked almost as if she were dancing than dodging as she turned and weaved passed the tables gracefully. The thug got tired of her constant evasive maneuvers and charged her straight on. She giggled as she bent over backwards and kicked him in the face as she brought her legs up, in a hand stand position. The guy swung his sword irritably, but she just pushed herself off the ground and into the air, avoiding the blade of his sword. She curled up into a ball as she flipped over and landed elegantly on the table close by.

“Fancy moves.” The thug spat at her hatefully.

The girl smiled a cheeky grin, “No use hating on me just because I’m good!” She teased, obviously not taking the matter at hand seriously. The second she dropped her guard; the thug flipped the table over on her, making her crash onto the floor with a loud thud and banged her head roughly against the floor. She moaned in pain as she held her head, not being able to react in time to see the thug’s blade coming at her face. She closed her eyes reflexively and tune in next time for the rest.

To be continued…Hope you enjoyed it and I’m already working on the next one. Sorry had to leave a cliffhanger, couldn’t resist.
