Whose Smarter Itachi or Shikamaru

I think in battle Itachi is more intelligent, if anyone notices all of the Shikamaru and his dad sit there for minutes on end and think about how best to come up with plans while Itachi just instantly has a plan that works out.
So in terms of battle strategy I would give it to Itachi because he is faster at it and his plans have always worked. Overall though I would give it to Shikamaru in terms of probably everything else; like Shogi or solving a puzzle or deciphering a coded message.

lol at saying shikamaru takes long to form strategies because he plays chess with his dad. Whereas Itachi "instantly" comes up with a plan that works out despite having years of time to think and create one.
I'll admit that itachi is smarter than shikamaru, but not by this logic.

Do you want me to show you every single battle that Shikamaru has fought in? I said nothing about his strategies in chess; in his battle against Temari he sat there for minutes trying to come up with a strategy, in his battle against Hidan the first time it took him a long time to figure out what Hidan was up to, and then again when he fought Hidan he took like 5-10 minutes to plan the battle out beforehand. And Shikaku also likes to sit and think about what to do, whenever he got the info that Naruto could sense emotions he still sat there for like 2 pages just trying to think up a strategy.
In the heat of battle that stuff wouldn't fly and an opponent who is actually skilled would not let them just sit there with their fingers touching to form an O for several minutes while they think up a strategy, they would die.
I think that Itachi doesn't have an IQ over 200 like Shikamaru does, but Itachi is one of the smartest out there. However, the fact that Shika has a higher IQ does not guarantee him a win over Itachi so who cares...

your right man, i agree with you..shikamaru is like one of those "sit there and analyze a situiation" type of guy and itachi can do that while he's fighting and under extreme pressure and still come out with a brilliant outcome lol. He shows how witty he is everytime he has screen time. there has not been one time when itachi has been shown wasting time..he's always 20 steps above the rest of the group. Dont get me wrong though shikamaru has like the highest IQ in the series or something like that, but he lacks the ability and coordinatation itachi has. In terms of who's more witty and on there toes it goes to itachi..overall brain power goes to shikamaru though
statement by kishi himself that kakashi is smarter than shikimaru , and kakashi did nothing but praise itachi's prodigyness(made that word up) in part 1 , so i guess we can jump to the conclusion that itachi > kakashi > shikimaru , or itachi=kakashi>shikimaru

If were talking book smarter its shikamaru, if were talking battle smarter its itachi. not even a debate on it. shikamaru and itachi are about the same when it comes to intellence but in a war/battle, no one is gonna let you sit there and come up with a plan which is what shikamaru has been shown to do often. Itachi has the ability to do the same thing but in a fraction of the time. almost instantly which is more effective in a battle. so it would really depend on what kinda smarts you are asking about.
wow, itachi now follow by only 1 in the poll, i wonder if this had anything to do with the evidence as stated by kakashi and naruto that kakashi is smarter than shikamaru, I think mostly everyone would agree that itachi is smarter than kakashi

yeah it does and i am a noob because even with our friends directions i didnt figure out how to put the picture up there. I have a link to the manga on the previous page that proves kakashi is as smart as shikamaru. If you can just make it a picture up here so people could see it that would make things much easier. heck

Itachi is smarter than shikamaru because he can think and also have the jutsus or skill to execute his plans.While shikamaru is also smart but he work better to instruct people who is capable inorder to execute his plan

What is the basis we're judging their intellects on?
Shikamaru is a genius as well as Itachi. However both shinobi's intellects are utilized in two completly different ways.
Shikamaru is a stratigist. He's book smart, able to comprehend things quickly and organize a stratigy in very little time, even in the middle of battle.
Itachi however plans things in advance, not neccessarily in battle but in life situations. Itachi is a strong stratigist in battle as well but to a lesser extent. When we think of Itachi, we think of somebody who has planned things in his life out. He's planned for specific situations.
They don't use their intellect in the same ways. Shikamaru is a better stratigist (IMO) and Itachi is better with predicting and planning for situations like we've seen him do so we can't really judge who's smarter like that.
If anybody wants to be technical. I doubt that Itachi has an IQ equal or higher then Shikamaru's. In terms of IQ Shikamaru would be smarter.
