FTG isn't all minato is about he also has many other jutsu, he was called a genious that come once ever 100 years, he doesn't only do FTG. thats the only thing we've seen him do but he can do much more. im not a minato fanboy, but minato is minato and yes he was mostly know for FTG but if he knows he cant use it he will try a different approach.

Itachi's physical attacks won't work since Minato is DAMN fast! and can transport a tech. from one place to another, so d only option is genjutsu.
