Well actually he put her under a genjutsu to make her believe she gave birth to Naruto right after Hello Kitty gave birth to him, he then sealed away the Kitty.....Minato isn't as good as everyone thinks he is!!

Yeah he was sealed with Shukaku in the womb and suffered nightmares that prevented him from ever being able to sleep proberly his entire life which caused his mental instability so even in the womb apparently he never had slept.
Well i'm just repeating Kishi's explaination from the manga when Gamabunta explained Gaara's host state to Naruto he told him all about the dark circles being from Shukaku's host never being able to sleep from horrible nightmares and if he ever falls all the way asleep Shukaku will rampage (thus the playing possum jutsu)
