Chhzzt. His radio buzzed, “Greg, this is Scott. We’re all prepared.”
Great. Now they knew for sure he had friends. “I’ll show you where they are on my map, in exchange for my life.”
“Yes, we spare you, more friends food for us.” Why couldn’t super mutants at least try to not sound like idiots?
Reaching into his pack, a cold metallic and cylindrical object was grabbed.
“Got it” he said as he pulled out the flash grenade, and ripped the safety pin.
Releasing the handle engaged it and he dropped it directly in front of him while falling back and covering his eyes. Suddenly immense amounts of light were released and the super mutants were blinded.
The sawed off double barrel was great at short range for people, but it’d have to be point blank for super mutants. He crammed the cold metal barrels into the nearest one's abdomen and depressed the trigger as the stainless steel hammer fell forward and fired a single barrel. Hundreds of balls of metal burst out of the barrel and into the mutant’s stomach ripping internal organs to shreds and pushing them through his back.
The other super mutant was bent over while rubbing at his eyes furiously. This was the one that snapped Tim’s neck. In exchange, Greg shoved the barrel directly into his throat, and fired the second volley. An explosion of lead pellets ripped through flesh and cracked bone while tearing muscles in to shreds as gore and blood exited the other side of his neck. Chunks of bone peppered the wall behind the mutant, outlined by flesh and oozing blood.
Super mutants don’t seem so tough when their head is connected by a few threads of flesh. Grabbing the super mutants hair, Greg ripped it’s head clean off his smoldering shoulders.
“Well, I’ve got your vengeance right here Tim. You seemed like a decent guy I suppose.” Greg began to start removing his boots, “looks like we have similar sized feet too.”
As Greg was in the process of “scavenging” he began to hear a scraping and muffled moan. “Well what the hell good that be? The sound seemed to be coming from behind a door, with peeling paint and no door knob. It was held shut by a block of wood hammered over it.
“Damn, curiosity. I can’t help but find out what’s behind here now.” he seemed intent on finding out too, as he already had a hammer wedged behind the board before he finished that sentence.
The door came flying open immediately as the board was pried off. Several young women in tattered clothing of the most revealing nature came tumbling out of it. They all seemed to be alive too. If there was a god, he was smiling on Greg right now.
“Well, ladies, what say we get out of here. I’ll escort you someplace safe.” Yeah, like my bed, Greg thought.
Then something caught Greg’s eye. It was a young boy, probably around thirteen years of age. He seemed to be enjoying the company of half naked women.
Then one of the women spoke up “Who are you?”
“I am simply known as Greg, however I am far less simple than that.
“Are you a slaver? These mutants caught us when we were traveling the New Reno and were going to sell us to slavers.” She seemed to be sobbing now.
Greg thought a moment, he wasn’t a slaver, but maybe it didn’t seem like a bad idea? No, Greg was much better than that, “No, I’m a just a wanderer who helps people in need.”
“You are a great man then, if you plan on rescuing us. How will you get us out of this …” She was cut off by something, and her eyes went wide as she was staring at somebody behind Greg.
“Just what the hell are you doing firing guns on my turf? Do you want to drive my ghouls crazy?” An extremely rasp voice sounded behind Greg, as if coming from rotting vocal cords.
As Greg turned around, a plume of smoke was exhaled into his face. A single ghoul stood there, surprisingly dangerous looking for a ghoul. He seemed to be wielding a silenced sub machine gun, and from the looks of it an Heckler and Koch, MP5KSD. Definitely a dangerous ghoul.
“Well, it was either shoot these guys, or end up like him.” Greg motioned to the smelling corpse of Tim.
“Hrm. Well, I’m holding my ghouls off for now, but you may want to get your marry bunch of people out of here while you can. I am kind of lazy.” The ghoul seemed to be losing interest in Greg now, as he continued smoking his cigarette.
“Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.” Greg waved the women and young boy to follow, and they did. He’d take them back to their makeshift patrol base, Redemption.
As Greg traversed the ruins of the old city, he seemed to notice the young man eyeing up his arsenal, and sticking by his side. “What’s your name, kid?”
The kid pointed to his chest, and in young man’s voice squeaking with puberty he said his name “Wesley.”
“Wesley, huh?” Greg scratched his chin a moment, looking back over his shoulder.
What the hell, the ghoul was still following him. Well, not going to make a big deal out of it anyway. As they reached the building, the doors swung open, and Scott greeted Greg.
“Hell, where is Tim, and where did they come from?” if anybody has ever looked confused, it was Scott right now.
And in response to confusion, absolute truth, “I already warned you all about there being risks. Tim was unfortunately a victim of said risks.”
“Well if you want to move safely through my city, you should have consulted me. If you want to get somewhere, I’ll get you there.” That damn ghoul again, what’s with this guy?
“And you are?” Greg was getting annoyed at this point, and the ghoul wasn’t going to do anything with many guns aimed through windows at him.
As the women scurried inside the building for now, and began receiving medical treatment, the ghoul just continued smoking. It seemed like he had a cigarette lit at all times.
“Oh, you say something?” The ghoul seemed to be trying to egg Greg on now.
“Yeah, I asked you your name, and you’re going to answer it.” Greg pushed aside his impatience, and sounded as calm and relaxed as possible in his statement.
“Oh, well why didn’t you just ask? My Name is Gary. I’m a ghoul.” Greg could only wonder how many people wanted this ghoul dead.
“Okay, Gary, mind telling me what you’re doing here?” anger rising, Greg began to sound quite annoyed with this ghoul.
“Ah, yes, you want to get someplace in that city. You got distracted by ghouls and thought it would be wise to sneak through buildings. What if I told you we could walk right through the ghouls, no shots fired, easy as can be.” Gary came off as being smug, and had his arms crossed over his chest. The sun seemed to shine off the skull peering out from under a hole through his flesh on his dome.
“Well, I’d say you were crazy, then again you are a ghoul.” Greg responded with a snap.
“Crazy? Well, maybe just a little. It get’s lonely in there, nothing but idiot mutants and feral ghouls and those pesky raiders. But, I did tell you, I am the ghoul! The ghoul who controls other ghouls. As in, they listen to me, obey me, and bend to my will.” this Gary guy was definitely an interesting character.
“If it turns out you were lying to me, I’ll kill you before I’m ravaged by ghouls.” Greg snapped his finger, then looked over his shoulder, “Everybody, wait here. If I’m not back by nightfall, leave without me.”
And so Greg and Gary wandered off into the ruins. It was about a mile into the ruins that they realized they were being tailed.
“Who do you think is following us?” Greg asked Gary casually.
Gary seemed annoyed, “The hell would I know, I’m just a ghoul, not a damn psychic.”
As they progressed further, they were clearly approaching a large group of ghouls. Yet the ghouls seemed to put them on their pay no mind list. It seemed incredible that this could happen. Yet Gary just puffed away on another damn cigarette. How could he smoke so much, didn’t he know how valuable cigarettes were?
“What, you attracted to me now?” Gary accused Greg.
“Shut the hell up and keep walking, we still have a tail.” Greg responded with a sigh.
“Well, as far as I can tell, I don’t have a tail. And neither do you. But if you haven’t noticed somebody is following us.” Gary’s attitude was enough to drive anybody mad.
“Are you serious? No freaking way. Unbelievable for you to have noticed somebody is following us.” Greg didn’t normally resort to sarcasm, but Gary seemed to be asking for it.
“Nah, it’s just the Wesley kid, I noticed him as soon as we left.” Gary replied with a grin, pointing out that Greg didn’t notice they were being followed.
“Well why the hell didn’t you just say so?” Greg turned around and caught a glimpse of Wesley just as soon as he ducked behind a trash can. “Hey, you want to join us, since you followed us this far?”
Sure enough, Wesley came out and came sprinting up to them. “Why aren’t these ghouls attacking us?”
Gary seemed to laugh at that one, “Well, that’s because I’m...”
“Will you just can it with that Gary. We’re almost there now.” Greg jumped in before Gary could run his mouth any further.
“Almost where? The old Home Depot? That dumps beyond empty now. Besides, we’re already past it.” Gary burst Greg’s bubble after being cut off by Greg.
“What? Why the hell didn’t you say so? Where the hell are we going?” Greg seemed angered and extremely annoyed.
“Well, now that you ask, I honestly don’t know. I figured you wanted something mechanical, and with fuel, so I was heading us somewhere special.” Gary seemed to know where they were going after all.
Though trouble seemed to loom ahead, as further down the road, there were three separate routes. Which one should they take?
“Left one is Super Mutant Lane, middle is Raider Avenue, and I really don’t know what’s down the right side.” Gary told Greg. “Of course, there is always the fourth alternative, which we should probably deal with first.”
“The fourth alternative?” Gary seemed a bit concerned seeing only three routes to take.
A long sigh, followed by a ghoul clearing its throat? “You’re obviously oblivious to your surroundings, either that or you can’t get those half naked women off your mind. Unfortunately for us, we seem to have stumbled into a radscorpion nest that didn’t used to be here.”
“You have got to be kidding me.” Greg exhaled an exhausted breath, seeing a massive radscorpion appear before them, probably twelve meters in length, not including the tail. “I don’t suppose you can control those too?”
“Not a chance. Did you think we should run? Greg? Hello?” Gary looked around, and saw Greg had already kicked in a door and left Gary all by himself. “Well shucks, he seems to be in a hurry. I wonder why?”
As Gary stood about talking to himself the radscorpions tail made a darting move for his torso. Yet the fiendish ghoul displayed remarkable agility in avoiding it, rolling off to the side and rolling back into a standing position as well. “Oh yeah, radscorpion.”
And so Gary fled into the building Greg had, slamming the door behind him.
“Why are you fumbling with that damn chain lock, Gary?” Greg shouted at Gary, motioning he climb the stairs as well.
“Well, to keep the radscorpion out.” Thunk, the radscorpion tail pierced completely through the door, ripping it out of the frame.
“I don’t think that chain will hold Gary.” Greg seemed to be getting impatient.
Gary just pointed to the chain, still intact to a part of the door. “Wont hold?”
“Will you just come on!” echoed down the stairs as Greg continued to leave Gary behind.
“Well, why don’t I just kill the radscorpion? Fine, don’t wait for me!” Greg ran up the stairs behind Gary.
The radscorpion’s massive bulk and frame couldn’t fit through the narrow stairs, and so it started thrashing, tearing the walls apart. As the walls broke apart, so did the floor below the second floor. Gary kicked out a back window and climbed into the fire escape, and proceeded to climb up it, followed by Wesley, and Gary.
“Okay, on the roof now. I really hope you have a plan to get us out of this, Gary. Gary? GARY? What the hell are you doing with that?” Greg seemed really panicked, and excited by what Gary held.
Gary slid the football sized projectile in his hand, then threw it into the air and caught it. “What this? It’s just a nuclear warhead.”
Greg’s eyes just sat wide and opened, “H-how the hell did you get that thing?”
“I’m a ghoul, hello? Did you forget, unaffected by radiation.” Gary kept tossing the nuclear warhead into the air and catching it.
After about the third time throwing it into the air, it tore off his left small finger as he tried to catch it, and it broke through a pain of glass below him. “Um, run? Guys? Where the hell did they go again?”
Greg and Wesley were already two roofs over, as nuclear blast erupted, blasting Gary through the air, onto the rooftop behind them. Debris flew every, shards of glass, radscorpion guts, bricks, wood, Gary.
“Just what the hell were you thinking? You’re a freaking madman, Gary. You could have killed us all!” Greg continued shouting in an incoherent rant. “And what the hell are you looking for now?”
“My pinky. It broke off. It’s going to be a long time before I find another one that matches.” Greg seemed panicked by something as feeble as a little finger.
“Forget the finger, which way do we go now?”

Greg’s eyes were now fully accustomed to the dark room. Tim’s body lay mangled, and lifeless. The sudden scent of fecal matter consumed the air, Greg barely resisted gagging. If he betrayed his people he could probably get out of this alive. Yet, that would most likely diminish his chances with Elizabeth.Another authors note. Chapter two had a cute little "choose your own adventure" type poll. This one will too. Last chapter had only two votes on it. Can we get three votes this time?
