Whats good guys, this might be un-answerable for most since you guys are young, but i built my custom rig this summer, and this is my senior year in high school. I am applying to colleges atm, and i plan on going to a small college, but i want to know if you are in college, and you brought your desktop to college.

I know it might seem as a silly question, but from what i hear, most only use laptops in their dorm and the lounge area, and some in class. I like taking notes by hand, so thats why i was apposed to buying a laptop. Security hopefully wont be an issue, but if it is, i wont bring it and i might end up buying a cheap laptop for college.

I have an NZXT Phantom case with a 23' monitor. obviously space might be an issue, but someone showed me their setup, and i might do that.

Physical Spec
Dimensions(L x W x H)
25.74" x 8.74" x 21.32"

here is a picture of my rig... its big, but i think i can put it in any dorm im in

You should buy something like a small netbook, i've seen netbooks with 4gb ram, 500gb hardrive and a decent cpu aswell. They only take usb thunbdrive's and don't have a rom drive or anything but they run fine and very reliable, i had an Acer and a Toshiba. Both were very acceptional. Atm i use my normal laptop with 8gb ram 1tb hdd with windows ultimate and it's cpu is not bad either, i say go with something light and portable like a netbook. Simple but very worth it.

I wouldn't risk taking a nice build comp like that anywhere lol i'd have it locked in a safe at fort knox!

I know, but it would stay in my dorm anyway. i dont like typing notes, and i would get distracted in class if I had a laptop. thats why i built a gaming rig.
I guess if you dont mind writing notes, then a desktop is fine. Typing is just a lot faster. I actually prefer desktops, but if you can make it work, more power to you! Just be prepared to find a way to organize all your handwritten notes. That'll be the annoying part.

ya, but im working on that in my senior year atm.

i just feel it would be better to have my rig in college, because i would play games on the weekend or whatever, but a laptop is something i was considering.

Why not take both?
well i think im going to get a newer updated laptop, something with a decent hdd, but affordable, something in the $400-$500 range, then whenever i get an apartment or a single, i will bring my rig. I just want the assurance that it will be safe before i bring it up, also, i dont want to lug it around before i go on a break.

now, i just gotta get my mom to spot me more money, because she spotted me the $1100 for my rig. FML

thanks for the help everyone

I'm considering the same option at the moment actually. You need to consider if a laptop will have a high enough performance for your course needs. My brother had a laptop but he found that 3D modelling and physics simulators for his engineering really operated below par when run on a laptop and he has since gotten a desktop for much the same price and it runs his software fine.

just buy a laptop
easier said than done, i spent 1100 on a custom rig in july, its going to be hard to get a laptop so soon, thats why im probably going to wait till next summer, and whenever i get an apartment, i will bring my rig up.

And if I knew I had to do something serious like 3d modelling, i would bring my desktop, since its got an AMD Phenom II x6 1090t cpu in it. But i think a laptop would be better for the mobility, and it takes way less space

My advice would be to take your desktop and simply take handwritten notes for your classes. In my experience, most of the classes I've taken don't require the use of a laptop- simply bringing a notebook for note-taking would always suffice. I've even had classes where the professor asks us not to use laptops because they're just a distraction and they're not truly needed anyway.

The only time you'll ever need a laptop is in a lecture type class where most of the material is being shown through a powerpoint. Even then, some professors provide you with the powerpoint anyway.

Again though, this is all in my personal experience. Yours may differ, but always remember: a laptop is simply a convenience. Any note-taking and planning can be accomplished by your average notebook and planner. Not to mention the fact that when you have a laptop with internet capabilities, it's really easy to get distracted or tempted to surf the internet during class.

On the other hand, some cons in having a desktop would that if you wanted some privacy, you wouldn't be able to get it. Depending on the school and people you are surrounded by, there might be too many distractions for you to be able to concentrate when writing out papers or typing assignments or what have you. It's times like these where the luxury of having a laptop and being able to move to a private place is a good thing.

Having both your desktop and a laptop would definitely be the best of both worlds, but again, if you can do without it, I'd say do without it. I guess the smartest option would be to bring your desktop, don't buy a laptop, and see how you do your first semester. The best way to gauge your needs is by actually understanding what you actually need. Speculating and predicting is smart, but actually knowing what you need will defeat the whole purpose of this speculation.

So my advice in a nutshell is to wait and find out.

i see what you are saying. im inclined to do that, but after i get in, next summer, im going to check my dorm, and the neighboorhood, and if that is good, i will bring my desktop.

Its just the major isssues are the space, the enviornment, and the security.

I would be happier with a single, but as a freshman and sophmore, that isnt probable. My buddy helped me find a nice laptop, but obviously prices will change in 1 year, so i will wait until summer to seriously consider, but im going to see if i can get a laptop for college, and then my sophmore year bring my desktop up.

so hopefully i will have both, but, id rather have an apartment for my desktop, so security isnt an issue
