How does Ao come to have the byakugan?

Seeing that when members of the branch family die their Byakugan dis activates how does obtain the Byakugan.

Yeah you could say that but wouldn't a main member of the clan missing be a big deal since the Byakugan is a leaf village Kg. And why would he only take one eye when he could just take both eyes?

he has another eye, and he doesn't have it always activated.. he just does and looks through the eyepatch.
