What is a Sage EXACTLY??

but hold on, if it was or is just a rank, then why isn't Naruto called a Sage all the time? why does he have to go "into sage mode" to be called a sage? is he only recognized as a Sage in that mode? shouldn't he be known as a Sage all the time even though he is only strong in that mode.

Also if Sage is just a rank doesn't the first Hokage deserve to be known as a Sage? What about all the other great Ninjas?

Sage is basically a rank any sage is an exceptionally strong shinobi in jiraiya and narutos case they were sages wothy of kage material but the SO6P is a sage that beat out all ninja ALL ninja (I'm looking at you madara)

exactly..this is what it meant when you say a sage....

for the So6P-he is a sage in the sense that he is the father of all ninjas....meaning he possess all the techniques used in the ninja world....profound wisdom...isn't it...

for the toads....not all toads are sages...only the two sages...fukasaku and shima..-they have profound wisdom in combining and controlling the perfect mixing of the three kinds of chakra thus....only them can use sage mode...which they taught the technique to jiraiya and naruto....in the village hidden in the leaf only jiraiya knows how to do this and no one else not after naruto was taught too.....

as to why naruto is not called sennin...he can be called like that but i prefer him calling naruto....jiraiya was called ero-sennin....and the So6P was rikudo-sennin...

Ok you guys are all dumb. In sage mode the user is taking energy from his surroundings to make themself stronger. Its like in Dragonball Z when Goku gains energy from the animals and trees and people of the earth. The sage mode is just like an Awakened self, and the chakra that is recieved from the surrounding enviroment added to the user's already extremely powerful chakra (they'd have to be to be able to master sage mode) Is what makes all of there attacks that much stronger. On the topic Sage of the six paths is most easily explained as a coincedence that the name is the same as Naruto's Sage. Its like an adjective saying the master of the six paths.

Oh and the toads are the only one's that can teach it because it was their ancestoral line that understood the Sage power. Its kind of like Kakashi and the Chidori. Sasuke could only learn it from him because he's the only one who knows it (im probably wrong but im just explaining my thoughts).

Sage Mode - Sense and then gather the natural energy, draw the energy of nature inside of them blending it with their own chakra.

this made me laugh really really bad....after saying all of us are dumb...you will say you're probably wrong....LOL....check my signature down and comprehend it so you will be enlightened....

anyway, some points you raised are true and some were merely your own understanding which becomes vulnerable to fault.....

1st point..if master = sage then, why only the toads can teach it and when you train in sage mode you would become a toad not of a slug, a snake, a hawk or other summoned animals....
anyone could be called sage then if i will follow your logic....tsunade is the master of ino and sakura...
kakashi is the master of naruto, sakura, and sasuke....but there is a part in the manga that states that only jiraiya can manage to go on sage mode not until naruto masters it too....and in the toad village..only the two sages were known fukasaku and shima...

2nd point..kakashi can teach chidori to sasuke because sasuke is inclined to lighting technique same like kakashi that specializes in lightning techniques and the one who invented and name the technique..but this cannot be paralleled to sage....even if you will be taught of the sage mode technique if you cannot master it you will be turned into a toad....

your explanation of the sage mode is true but don't equate it to dragon ball z..in narutoverse, it has its own explanation....

sennin-called to ninjas who uses senjutsu...(SENjutsu NINja) only few can be said who uses this technique, jiraiya and naruto of the leaf, fukasaku and shima of the toad village, rikudo, the father of all ninjas...only them can combine nature chakra to there existing chakra(combination of physical energy and spiritual energy) thus mixing three types of energy (nature, physical or body and spiritual energies)

naruto is only using the sage mode, a technique....senjutsu.......a time(mode) where he is combining nature chakra and his own chakra. he is not all the time Sage...by the way in grammar when we say sage mode...sage here is not equal to Sage....as a noun....

Sage of Six Path-Sage here is a noun....he has profound knowledge in the six path..
Sage mode-noun here is mode and sage is the adjective that modifies the noun....

Rikudo-sennin is a sage and at the same time the father of all ninja so he is a ninja too..he knows all jutsu...so he can use senjutsu....a person who uses senjutsu becomes a sennin....when he is not using the senjutsu...he is still a Sage...

Naruto is just using the technique..sage mode....meaning he is not a sage all the time, only during the time or mode that he is using senjutsu that he is in a sage state....because of the term sage mode....

this is anime...time and space can be controlled.....everything is possible....reality in narutoverse is different from the real world....

the 2 one i.e senju is the clan having physical energy of the SO6P..... the were strong.... thats what sage mode does..... it is nothing else than the gathering of spiritual energy....

rinnigan belong to uchiha and uzumaki combined...... well its a mutation that took place in nagato body as he had senju blood..... my theory though..... madra gave him only sharingan (uchiha dna) which mutated to rinnigan due to presence of senju blood so basically it belongs to SO6P who had both uzumaki and uchia dna.....
