Check out Youtube for "Ancient Aliens".
There are like 9 45min episodes about the egyptians and mayans etc and so on.
They talk about alot of interesting stuff and give nice pointers that makes you want to ask more questions.

In my view there are 2 ways these things could have played out.
1. Maybe the sumarian texts where not bullshit. It's in us to glorify ourselfs not to say flat out we're created to be slaves. The egyptians never really wrote down failures just the good stuff. I find that very intresting and gives the texts a +1. Human ingenuity goes far that is a fact, but we have more the tendancy to copy. They knew things we barely have knowledge of today. After (if they excisted that is) aliens left everything got sidetracked and the weirdest religions are born. Spawned mayans egyptians greeks etc. Their myths are bad translations with a mix of their own myths of the sumarians texts. I have to be honest i whas raised very religious and whas forced to read the bible. These god encounters always did read just like an alien encounter, i whas 6 years old when i whas thinking this. But unless i wanted some old fashion religious beating i shut the hell up xd.
2. Maybe our civilization is much much older then we think. We know the sumarians are formed at the end of the ice age (more or less they found objects of 7k year old but they cannot carbondate stone so could easily be much older, the ice age stopped 12k to 10k years ago) I can assume digging in iraq isn't so easy diplomatic wise now a days, even iran whas a US ally at one point in time but i know you won't be digging there in this political climate. Suppose they where preceeded by cities like atlantis, but there are more sunken cities, atlantis is just well known. Thing is that when the polar caps melted allot of land is lost and the sea shoreline has always been a popular settling destination because of the large foodsupply the sea has. Perhaps we will find new answers in the deep sea where the shoreline once whas to explain these 'lost' technologies and knowledge. For all we know they just copied it from other civilizations we don't know aboout yet.
Anyway i wouldn't just dismiss the idea of aliens because if you ask me what is more plausible god (or gods) or aliens? I'd say aliens. Cause the vast number of solar systems out there creates allot more odds then ... a spiritual being that contradicts itself on any level. Ofcourse all in all i keep an open mind as i don't know facts about this.
If we where in fact created (genetically engineered) as the sumarians claim we all know they'll be sorry at one point or another in time, and that IS a fact.

They are real and all, and its quite interesting to think about there being aliens here in the past. Kinda makes the whole "god thing" make a sense a tad. Early mans small understanding of all that is around him at the time probably.
