Personality:
Though commonly called cold or distrusting, Kai is just reserved and doesn't talk much. He is more analytical than emotional, and respects his honor above all else. He is a dedicated fighter and holds respect more for those who get the job done above those who fail to protect a rule or their own honor and is therefore also a hypocrite.

History:
Kai's parents were shinobi from the hidden sand, where he was born. They held strength as the only attribute that mattered in life, and forced that initial belief onto him as he grew up. His parents were firm believers in the invasion of Konoha, until it failed. After receiving news of Sunagakure's surrender, Kai's parents lost their faith in their homeland and imediately began moving to move to Konoha, who they now viewed as the superior village. While on the move, they made the young Atomaru carry a much larger portion of their supplies and began to make fun of him, calling him Kai (“bearer of the keys” in some languages and just a name in others). The young shinobi was ignorant to the fact that he was being made fun of and kept the name.
After arriving in Konoha, Kai was not altogether accepted as many villagers harbored resentment against the sand for the invasion. Kai saw this hostility as abnormal and therefore continued to wear the mark of his beloved Suna. His parents continually attempted to prevent him from wearing the necklace, which led to him eventually carving the symbol into the underside of his arm. His love of Sunagakure eventually led to a break in his relationship with his parents as they lost more and more respect for their former homeland. After losing contact for many months, Kai learned of his mother's apparent suicide and then soon after, his father's disappearance. However the news troubled him little as he had long since broken his connection to those people.
As time went on, the hostility towards him faded as the sand and leaf mended their relationship, but the scars of distrust were constantly with Kai as he grew older. Though he does not distrust villagers of the leaf, he prefers the company of sand shinobi, finding a kinship with them that he doesn't have with the others.
