i think cause obito could also awaken mangekyo sharingan but passed it to kakashi enabling kakashi to awaken mengekyo shiringan as well
how did kakashi get mangekyo sharingan

the only way to access the mangekyo sharingan is to kill youre closest friend or even like how sasuke activated his, where he fought the closest person to him and killed him (itachi) ......(maybe even just being there to witness there death works aswell.) my thoughts on this are that kakashi was trying to protect RIN and he couldnt protect her and ended up activateing the mangekyo sharingan when she had died. it could be what actually happened but honestly i doubt we will see any insight on how it really went down now unless they do more fillers near the end of the war.

He probably looked at the reflection of his sharingan on the water and put himself in a genjutsu to believe that he killed a close comrade. lol jk on a side note wouldn't be cool if kakashi replaced his right eye with nagatos remaining rinnegan.

it would be wasteful to do that, hes spent all this time trying to master his sharingan and it wouldnt make sense for him to throw it away for the rinnegan especially considering he can copy other jutsu styles. plus that sharingan he possesses is the a gift from his closest friend, it reminds him of the sacrifice obito made to save rin and kakashi... also he has even changed his former attitude from getting the mission completed no matter what sacrifice, to saving your comrades is more important.

I said his right eye not his left haha. His left is the sharingan if he has the rinnegan on his right he'd be powerful.
the loss of sasuke did have a bad toll on him, but it wasnt the cause of the mangekyo sharingan being activated. even when he saw naruto idk if he thought he was dead at the final valley but even then he didnt shed a tear.
sasuke was his favorite student out of the group, but i think it was more meaningful to kakashi when he saw naruto lieing there like he was dead. if sasuke meant that much to kakashi he would have surely tracked him down instantly after he found naruto, and had summoned the bigger dog to carry naruto back to the village while kakashi at least attempted to catch up to sasuke.
Killing your closest friend is A way of getting it, not THE way to get it.
Mangekyou Sharingan is unlocked when you lose the closest person to you. Madara explained this to Sasuke after his fight with Itachi. It has nothing to do with the act of killing them. It's the strong emotional trauma you feel for actually losing them.
When I think about it I think Madara left out a crucial part of attaining the Mangekyou Sharingan. I think in addition to feeling the grief of losing the closest person to you, there also needs to be a feeling of determination or some new found resolve. You notice that Sasuke activates his new Mangekyou Sharingan after stating his new goal of destroying Konoha.
Kakashi was grieving for years for losing Obito and Rin, but maybe he wasn't able to get over it and forgive himself. It's known he constantly visited the memorial stone for Obito. He was beating himself up over it. Maybe during the 2 year time skip he found his resolve again and that's how he got it.
Of course this is just a personal theory.

no no no people. there is TWO ways to get MS. btw to the second post ^^^ it was three years of training with jiraiya. but the second way to get MS, is to focus an extremely large amount of chakra under that eye for three days. making it incredibly difficult.
im thinking it was over the deaths of them aswell. sasuke did leave the village but the only people who felt strongly about it as if they had lost someone close to them was naruto and sakura. kakashi was upset too, but not enough to activate the mangekyo sharingan... thats why i think it had something to do with the loss of obito or rin, or even both.
I know. I explained my idea about Obito and Rin in the last part of my post.
Besides, if it was JUST losing them, then it doesn't explain why Kakashi got his Mangekyou so late. It's roughly 20ish years since Obito died and who knows when Rin died.

Its obviously not the narmal mongekyo if so he would be able to use the tsukiyomi since its his left eye, its probably just a unique abillity of his/Obitos sharingan, some sharingan have special abillities like shisuies eye.
True. Sharingan's abilites can be unique, but a Mangekyou Sharingan is a Mangekyou Sharingan.
It's fact that the eye Kakashi uses for Kamui is a Mangekyou Sharingan and not just a special ability or special form.
Then why did Kakashi call it a new technique when he first used his Mangekyou Sharingan with Naruto against Deidara?

Not exactly. If I remember correctly he used what looked like a tiger seal to concentrate when he first used it, but that was the only time he did it. Every time after that he does it without seals.
Most likely building up chakra to use it because he's not a pure-blood Uchiha. Needed prep time would be my guess, and since he's used to it now he probably doesn't have to do it anymore
