Let's recap the events which led to the extermination of the Uchiha Clan. If you go as far back as the establishment of Konoha, there has been one voice who has been whispering war into the ears of the Konoha shinobi: Madara Uchiha.
When Hashirama was chosen to be the village leader the uchiha clan gladly accepted it. Madara tried to convince the Uchiha that the Senju would oppress them but the clan turned there backs on him. Now according to what he told Sasuke, Madara returned to fight Hashirama at the Valley Of The End in order to stop the Senju from oppressing the Uchiha.
This is probably false due to the fact that Madara not only helped to wipe out the Uchiha clan after the fact that they had started to believe that he was right, but he also trained his accomplice. Why not just come back and lead the rebellion the Uchiha were planning? According to what he told Konan, he fought the battle in order to obtain Hashirama's cells. This is true and we have seen that he's using Hashirama's cells to mass produce White Zetsu.
Theory: After Madara was shunned by the Uchiha, he met with Zetsu, discovered his powers, and came up with his REAL plan which I'm sure has nothing to do with casting an infinite tsukyomi. I believe the proof for both these points lies in his battle with the 4th, where we see that Madara is at least using arms made from Zetsu(Theory: These arms have been made from the cells stolen from Hashirama and having them gives him access to Izanagi).
Now If Madara's real plan was to capture all the bijuu and seal them in a statue and revive the Juubi and so on and so forth.......why would he attack Konoha after aquiring the Fox? Why not just escape with it and summon it later once he was able to seal it within Gedo Mazo?
Theory: Madara made the Nine-Tails attack the village so that the village elders would suspect that an Uchiha had done it, stop trusting the clan, and eventually wipe them out which is exactly what happened. I believe that Madara and Danzo had a meeting which resulted in Itachi being chosen to wipe out the Uchiha. Think about it? Why did Itachi offer to help Madara wipe out the Uchiha? To save Konoha. But why would Madara agree to that? Because he was not powerful enough to do it himself. He needed the massacre to happen in order to collect the all the sharingan, which I'm sure is another piece to his true plan.
