Usually I dont like when an author leaves it open how it ends it usually gives me dissatisfied feeling. Think when it's acceptable it's due to author having continuation planned, sometimes like them when gives reader room to believe things ended well example shipping series that dont define a clear final girl you can pick how it ends. Lastly like them when you can use context clues in the series to theorize the intended ending. When open endings done right leaves a feeling wonder, mystery, suspense.
Alot of times authors leave open endings for no good reason doesnt really serve any purpose and leaves you dissatisfied you follow a stories journey which led you no where.
Like I said theres times open endings can be okay but prefer defined endings and how good an ending is to me distinguishes good, mediocre and bad writers. Many times open endings are just cop outs to not disatify readers I like an author how has an ending in mind and can stick to it. Sometimes your not going to satisfy people but ending tells me you have a clear story you want to convey. Let's say if all stories ever written became open ended I think people would hate that think most great and impactful stories need solid beginning and end.
Do you tend to have negative, positive or neutral opinions on open endings.
