Account farming isn't exactly a new concept. MMORPGs have been doing it for a long time; since the original Ever Quest days and when WoW started up. Even Runescape I believe people do it a lot, they just usually go into it with the thought in mind of making monetary value off of it from start.
Sometimes it's also a matter of finding it to outlive it's relevancy to you. People sell entire collections of trading cards (pokemon, yu gi oh, magic, etc) that they spent hundreds of hours with but just don't play anymore. Sometimes it's easier to take a fistful of cash than it is to hold onto something you don't want or use anymore.
I'm not sure that's necessarily true. You can still have some sentimental value for what you built and spent time for, but that doesn't mean you can't lose interest in it. Like I said, I feel like trading cards are the best example I can personally think of. Plenty of people outgrow those sorts of things or just move onto a different time-sink all together and find they spend less and less time on it, but still have a hard time letting it go because of the amount of time/money they put into it. That hesitation can be seen as sentimental. Doesn't change that they give it up, but doesn't mean they don't do it with a heavy heart.To lose interest would mean for you to lack the sentiment for what you've build/acquired etc. Which is what i said
Though I'm not saying you're wrong either. There are people who don't have any hesitation or feeling of consequence from doing it. Which I don't think is necessarily a bad thing personally, just a difference in perspective on how one places value on their time.
Sentimental doesn't abide by reason/logic, it's bound by emotion and nostalgia. If you hold that emotional value with the feeling of nostalgia, would money really be the first thing on your mind? With trading cards, i still have all of mine somewhere. Something i collected as a kid was lego, i held onto that and gave it my cousin 12 years younger than me. I mean i wanted to give it to him to enjoy based on my memories and feelings rather than any financial gain.
I just think how can you just write off a piece of you, something you invested in for $100. Something you can easily make in a days work. Don't get me wrong i know people can be in tough situations and be forced to do things like sell things of value. It's just not a regular thing i would see someone doing with the invested current emotion.
I mean AB is a bit more than that. Imagine spending years working towards and grinding to form something personal to you. Creating customs and bios and putting in the effort to build the bio that is perfect to suit you. Do you really feel so emotional to it to give it up for a sum like that?
Personally i'd think no. But each to their own.
Sentiment isn't bound to reason or logic, but the choices made in the face of it can be. I do agree that $100 doesn't seem like much for that sort of time commitment, but I would also argue the flip side of that point that I really wouldn't see any profile from any forum being worth that. Sure they can be "super-suited" so to speak, but it ultimately has no worldly value outside of the comparably small community it's from. Not just anyone would be willing to pay for it, so $100 would be considered a good deal for something that has almost no market in the first place.
As far as you giving away your legos, that could arguably be similar to the process of selling it. Sure you didn't monetize it, but you recognized that someone else might have more value out of it than you do now, so you "passed the torch" to make sure it didn't just collect dust simply because you have good memories. It's entirely possible the people who sell their things think of it the same way, but believe that if they can at least make something off of it, may as well, right?
