So this is a debatable topic.

Right now, the fans think they own properties such as, Star Wars, Terminator, Naruto, and so on. They get pissed when directions change or story veers off.

I was always told, write for yourself. An audience will always come. If you write for fans, you will just end up working for them, which is tiresome.

I think YouTube kind of ruined writers because the Youtuber has become an arbitrary authority, who can rile people up because they are upset. Or their fan theories didn’t work out.

Anyways, is it time to accept stories for what they are and not what you want them to be?

I'm not really pissed about anything so I don't know.
I think fan backlash and criticism can be hard to take constructively, there are critics who for years said never make an increadibles sequel, then when they saw it they changed their minds, imagine if the makers had listened to them?
The standard has been rasied now I think, before people were happy if there even was a movie based on a book or something, now if you want to base something of a popular ip there is all kinds of pressure to know the lore and to do it right, at least I would never dare to take too many liberties etc if I worked on something like Star Wars.
Star wars has been taken over by fans anyway, George Lucas would never have done Episode VII the way JJ did it, but people liked what JJ did.
It's in other hands now, just like Boruto is not in Kishi's hands anymore, people are gonna take it in directons that people don't like or maybe they will like it a lot. Who knows.

:lmao:

OT: If the writer is milking an existing work, living off of it or has established things then he should write in accordance with that. Fans can't be blamed for expecting such things.

If the author is writing an original work then they can set their own standards or write in their own style. Fans no longer come with expectations and will be more open to the idea as they were with primary works.

Well yeah it is the writer's work after all, HOWEVER when you have such a successful story whether it be in film, written, and such and you have a huge fandom there is a sense of duty to oblige the fans with what they would want to see in the story without selling your storytelling short. Basically the writer should write the story they wish to tell but also consider what a fan would want to see, besides what makes a good storyteller is someone who can write a story that the reader or viewer can feel a connection to whether it be story or character. I think you need both fan and writer to make the best series of a story possible..

Wasn't that always the case, even way before YouTube?

They have every right to get pissed off, especially when it comes to Star Wars.

Explain to me why they have any right?

Are you saying you support some socialist Marxist takeover of intellectual property?

What, i shouldn't be allowed to dislike something and criticize it?

Are you saying i should be ok with tyranny?

Do you have any background in writing? Like, do you understand the fundamentals in screenwriting? Movie production, act structure, technical aspects in movies or television, and other stuff where you can have an opinion?

Because, seriously, most of the time it’s “the story that doesn’t fit my expectations” argument for why a movie sucks, not because the movie structure is bad.

So mr. socialist, why should you own any part of a production that you had nothing to do with?

You realize the connection don’t you?

Okay. So basically, it’s because I’m a United States Citizen, I can bitch about everything wrong with the country and it should be listened to. Am I getting this right?

If it’s your own original work then I agree. Write what you like. That extends to written stories in another writer’s universe...

That said, simply rewriting plots and themes in an already established story with already established characters better keep the original cannon in mind or black lash is imitate.

Actually yes. That’s how it works. You live in America you took the time to vote in your leaders you pay their salaries with your own money so you have a voice in how the country is run even if others may disagree.

Same with stories. While I agree you should write for yourself; the fact is the writer is getting our time and money for their creation so we have a say on whether we like it or not.

Writers can write however or whatever they want, but if they value the success or reception of their writing they should write for the fans. Who else would they be writing it for?
