He sank down into the sludge of Pain's village after sending the message on Grandpa Frog's back.

He said he wanted to go out fighting, go out protecting Konoha for the next generation; I think he is still needed and hate to see this as no more than a convenient plot device.

Here is what prompted the question:

Early on, in their visit to the island where Naruto Bridge was built, Kakashi explained that a Ninja's body must always be retrieved by his village in order to protect the secrets it holds.

We saw a fade-out as he drifted downward in the water; at the same time, he looked forward to writing his next novel and got the inspiration just then. It left me with hope that he would be coming back; for me, it's always good to have someone who knows how to get his rowdy on.

The long explanation in the early Naruto of not leaving a Ninja's body to be dissected for secrets was not there for nothing, so it makes me think that one of the toad-frogs gulped him down and transported him back to Mt. Miyo-- , Toad Mountain, for healing and retirement/leisure.

. . . and that begs the question, where did Zabuza's body go, since Haku was dead also. Who took their bodies to safety?

I thought I read in the manga that Jiraiya's body was in Konoha, just before Pain came and the whole place blew up. I can't find where I thought I saw it.

Anybody? O.O

Zabuza and Haku were burried by Kakashi

yes it may be within the realm of possinility that a toad did take him back to the mountain but then again it might not.

Besides what would be the point of retrieving him for the purposes that you proposed? he is at the bottom of lake the no one is going to to go to the bottom just see if there is a body down there. the only reason that Konaha might even consider going in another village within another country to retrieve his body is because he is a beloved friend, sensei, a savior of the village, and the student of the third, mentor of the fourth, godfather of naruto and a sannin that happens to be from Konaha....

im pretty sure that konoha couldn't retrieve the body yet since jirayai being there might constitute an act of war since he was spying...im sure that when konan went back she would let konoha come and retrieve the body...so if not now jirayais body will be retrieved soon. And konoha would want the body since he is a part of their heritage....which is also confirmed due to their early searches for orichimarus body wether to honor it or destroy it we will never know

His body is at the bottom of that lake where he was fighting with Pain .
Frogs didnt knew where he died since both fukasaku and maa escaped before he died , Konan dont know where his body is since she wasnt there when he died.
Pein knew but he died so he cant tell any1 about it .
Only person alive that knows where is Jiraiyas body is Zetsu , but i doubt he will tell any1

"Zabuza and Haku were burried by Kakashi"

Thanks for setting my mind at ease about these two. That makes sense.

"yes it may be within the realm of possinility that a toad did take him back to the mountain but then again it might not."

SPOILER??

An image just flashed across my mind as I was writing this reply, visualizing Kakashi burying them in a place where their bodies could not be investigated by other nations for jutsus: I remember seeing Naruto paying his respects to someone buried at the foot of a great (Oak?) tree -- an isolated grave that I took to be Jiraiya's. Maybe it's Naruto's mom's or dad's -- it was a short scene that had no big lead up to it, as casually as a "filler."

It's like the Marines: Ninjas never leave their dead. The Marines would have the Navy Seals out after Jiraiya's body post haste.

"Besides what would be the point of retrieving him for the purposes that you proposed?"

It's not that I proposed this; it was explained in the early Naruto episode when team Kakashi was on their first big mission, to the Land of the Waves, when Haku paralyzed Zabuza temporarily to make him seem dead, and then they disappeared. I forget who explained it: he said that Ninja bodies are never left by their comrades because other nations want to get Ninja bodies in order to pull their secrets from them -- the chakra, the jutsu, and who knows what all. Ninja bodies are destroyed, blown up, or hidden in order to protect village secret techniques.

As one of the San Nin, Jiraya's body of information, so to speak, would be highly desirable to study, and ol' Pain/Pein knew he was in that water. We know now that Pain is gone; we don't know that he/they didn't retrieve it before attacking Konoha (as he/they had been retrieving corpses to make over for some time already).

"He is at the bottom of lake the no one is going to to go to the bottom just see if there is a body down there."

One person mentioned that no one knew he was there, not even the toad frogs; I think grandpa toad/frog knew, even though he hurried away with the message on his back to take the news to Tsunade and the village.

"The only reason that Konaha might even consider going in another village within another country to retrieve his body is because he is a beloved friend, sensei, a savior of the village, and the student of the third, mentor of the fourth, godfather of naruto and a sannin that happens to be from Konaha...."
Indeed. No greater reasons could exist.

. . . soooo . . . since the saving the corpses from other villages was important enough to mention, it is something to consider. As is said of mysteries, "If you see a gun on the table in scene one, you will be seeing it again later," as there is no point to introduce irrelevant details.

Thanks everybody for helping me think about this. I'm not done with it yet . . . and I appreciate getting input on the topic. I miss Jiraiya too much.

I think he needs to go over to Risembol to get some good auto mail made to replace his left arm. . . .

Good thinking, Felixman! Thanks for that.
As to searching for Orochimaru's body -- to study it for what they could learn of his techniques.

I believe that this, about destroying / hiding Ninja bodies, is in Book 4 of the Manga. I'd have to go back through my DVDs to catch the episode and scene

SPOILER:[/COLOR] Anime Episode 175

I've got it. I watched anime episode #175 again last night: that is where I saw the image that flashed across my mind thinking about Zabuza and Haku and Kakashi burying them.

The scene that I barely recalled is this one in episode 175:

After Konan (?) -- the paper girl -- gave the bouquet of paper flowers to Naruto, Naruto set off for Konoha. He stopped in a small glen or glade and paid his respects: at the foot of a large tree is a stone marker that says "Shih" (Chinese pronunciation of character) or "Shir" (Mandarin Pronunciation; both first tone [clipped, high intonation]). That character means Master, or teacher (is a part of the characters for teacher; in Chinese the two are Lao shih, "Old Master"). That is Jiraiya's resting place/grave. Naruto laid the bouquet of paper flowers at this marker, walked a bit, and collapsed onto Kakashi, who magically appeared beneath him and carried him to all of Konoha, cheering. Nice touch.
<3

Anyone read and speak Japanese? Is the second character of "Sen sei" this same character?
